Rare Raincoat Pikachu Card Sells for $8.4 Million

October 1, 2026·3 min read

A rare 2015 Raincoat Pikachu promo card has sold for $8.4 million after 64 bids. The PSA 10 card was originally created as a Pokémon Art Academy contest prize.

A rare Pokémon card commonly known as Raincoat Pikachu has sold for $8.4 million, becoming the second-highest publicly reported Pokémon card auction sale behind only Pikachu Illustrator.

The 2015 Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Pikachu, illustrated by Y. Fujishima, sold through Fanatics Collect on September 28 after drawing 64 bids. The card is graded PSA 10 Gem Mint, and the final $8.4 million price included the auction house's buyer's premium.

The card traces back to the Japanese Pokémon Art Academy illustration competition held across late 2014 and early 2015.

Players created artwork using Pokémon Art Academy on Nintendo 3DS and submitted entries through Miiverse. Y. Fujishima was one of the winners in the Dress-Up Pikachu category, with the design showing Pikachu prepared for rainy weather in a coat and carrying an umbrella.

Each winning artist received 100 copies of an official Pokémon TCG card featuring their artwork. The cards were produced specifically as prizes and were never released through normal retail Pokémon products, leaving them with an unusually limited original distribution.

The example sold by Fanatics also carries PSA's highest possible grade. PSA currently records 57 copies of the Fujishima card at Gem Mint 10, with none graded higher.

The $8.4 million sale is far above previous prices

The latest result stands out not only because of the card's rarity, but because other PSA 10 copies have sold for dramatically less.

Heritage Auctions sold one for $156,250 in June 2026. PSA also records a Gem Mint 10 example selling for $79,999.99 in August, while Fanatics Collect sold another for $17,400 in July 2025.

That makes the $8.4 million auction an extraordinary departure from the card's recent public sales history rather than a gradual increase toward its new price.

There is no obvious difference in grade that explains the gap, since the comparison cards were also PSA 10 examples. The sale therefore establishes a new auction benchmark for Raincoat Pikachu, but it should not be taken to mean that every copy carrying the same grade now has an $8.4 million market value.

Pikachu Illustrator still holds the Pokémon auction record

Raincoat Pikachu remains behind one considerably more expensive Pokémon card.

A PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator formerly owned by Logan Paul sold through Goldin for $16.492 million on February 16, 2026. Guinness World Records recognizes that result as both the most expensive Pokémon card sold at auction and the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction.

Pikachu Illustrator was also created as an illustration-contest prize, making both of Pokémon's largest publicly reported auction sales connected to cards that were never distributed through ordinary retail sets.

Raincoat Pikachu's $8.4 million result now places the 2015 Art Academy prize card alongside the most valuable collectibles in Pokémon history, despite comparable copies changing hands for a fraction of that amount only months earlier.
