Starfield Mod Shows Seamless Planetary Flight Without Loading Screens
October 14, 2026·3 min read
A work-in-progress Starfield mod aims to remove loading screens between orbit and planetary landings.
A Starfield modder has demonstrated a work-in-progress system that allows ships to fly from orbit to a planet's surface without the game's usual loading-screen transition. The project, called Seamless Landings, supports both automatic and manual descents and is planned as a free PC mod.
Creator Frederik Wessberg says he has spent roughly six months developing the system. The mod is not publicly available yet, and Wessberg has not announced a release date.
Ships Can Fly Directly From Orbit to the Surface

The demonstration shows a ship approaching a planet from space before passing through its atmosphere and reaching the surface without cutting to a loading screen. Players will be able to let the autopilot handle the descent or remain at the controls and fly manually.
Autopilot provides another option that Starfield normally cannot offer during landings. Players can leave the pilot's seat and move freely around their ship while it travels toward the surface, allowing them to watch the approach from elsewhere onboard.
Manual flight will also work in low orbit and continue directly toward the ground. Wessberg says the system even supports landing on water, which is not normally possible when choosing a landing location in the base game.
The Mod Rebuilds Starfield's Planets in 3D

Creating the system required more than removing an existing transition. Wessberg explained that planets viewed from space in the original game rely on comparatively simple rendering that was never designed to be approached all the way from orbit.
Seamless Landings therefore reimplements planetary rendering in 3D. It uses information already present in Starfield, including biome maps, climate data and atmospheric composition, to create planets that remain detailed as the ship moves closer.
Atmospheric approaches can feature volumetric clouds, thunderstorms, lightning and auroras near planetary poles. The project also includes atmospheric scattering, terrain shadows, oceans, snowcaps, city lights and re-entry effects around the player's ship.
Seamless Landings Is Still a Work in Progress
Wessberg described the footage as an early public demonstration rather than a finished release. Although the core landing system is already working, development is continuing before the mod is made available to players.
The project is being built for the Starfield Script Extender, meaning it is currently intended for PC rather than Xbox. Wessberg plans to release the finished version for free through Nexus Mods, but there is no confirmed launch window.
Seamless Landings was partly inspired by existing projects that tackled other breaks in Starfield's space travel. Mods already exist for smoother grav jumps and planetary takeoffs, while Bethesda has added its own cruise-mode improvements since launch.
The missing piece was the journey in the opposite direction. If development continues as demonstrated, Seamless Landings will let PC players travel from space to the ground as one continuous journey, although players will have to wait for its public release before they can try the system themselves.
