The Expanse returns in 2027 with Osiris Reborn

The Expanse is returning with a new video game in 2027, as Owlcat Games prepares to release The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The third-person sci-fi action RPG is currently scheduled for spring 2027, with its Steam listing narrowing that window to the second quarter of the year.

The project is not a continuation of Prime Video's television series, which concluded after six seasons. Instead, Owlcat is telling a new story inside the same universe, with players creating their own captain and crew while familiar conflicts between Earth, Mars and the Belt continue around them.

Players take the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose shore leave on Eros Station is interrupted when the station enters lockdown. The incident pulls the protagonist into a wider conspiracy and eventually puts them in command of the Gemini, a highly advanced spacecraft.

The captain can be created as an Earther, Martian or Belter, with that background affecting parts of the story. Owlcat has also built the game around player decisions, relationships and a crew whose opinions can change depending on the choices made during missions.

Osiris Reborn combines third-person shooting with RPG systems and companion management. Players take squad members into combat, while other crew members can still contribute from the Gemini and become involved in decisions away from firefights.

One of the central companions is J, the protagonist's twin and executive officer. J's background and gender match the player character, while their relationship with the captain can develop differently depending on decisions made throughout the story.

Owlcat has already released a closed beta for players who purchased eligible Founder's editions. The test includes an early mission, gunplay, abilities, dialogue choices and a first look at how companions operate alongside the player.

Owlcat describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as its most ambitious game to date. The studio is best known for RPGs including Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, but Osiris Reborn moves toward a more direct third-person action format.

The game was first announced in June 2025, with Owlcat confirming from the beginning that it would tell an original story rather than recreate events from the television adaptation. Development has continued through 2026 with beta testing and more detailed reveals covering character origins, weapons and player choices.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG. Xbox players will also receive the game through Game Pass Ultimate on day one, with Xbox Play Anywhere support confirmed.

Owlcat has not announced an exact release date beyond spring 2027, while Steam currently lists Q2 2027. The game therefore marks the next major interactive release for The Expanse universe, with additional development updates expected before launch.
