Unused Gen 4 Pokemon designs appear online
July 23, 2026·2 min read
Scrapped beta Pokemon designs from Generation 4 have appeared online after footage from an internal Pokemon Diamond and Pearl development DVD surfaced. The material comes from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: Behind the Scenes DVD – Make All, a Game Freak documentary that was never publicly released.
The footage gives fans a rare look at Sinnoh before the final Nintendo DS games launched. It includes early Pokemon designs, beta gameplay, unused creatures and alternate versions of familiar Pokemon.
Yellow Shellos Is The Big Surprise

One of the most talked-about designs is a yellow Shellos. In the final games, Shellos has two regional forms, with the pink West Sea form and the blue East Sea form split across Sinnoh.
The yellow version suggests Game Freak tested another look before settling on two forms. Shellos also has a strange development history, since unused sprites and older developer comments suggested the sea slug Pokemon was considered before Generation 4.

Original Starter Designs Also Appear
The footage includes early designs tied to the Sinnoh starter lines. Beta versions of the Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup lines appear alongside a scrapped Water-type starter concept that did not make the final game.
Starters help define each Pokemon generation. The alternate designs show how much the Gen 4 lineup changed before Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup became the final trio.
More Scrapped Pokemon Were Shown

The DVD footage includes more than Shellos and starter designs. Fans have also spotted a scrapped Delibird evolution, beta Arceus artwork, early Dialga and Palkia designs, and possible concepts linked to Glameow and Lumineon evolutions.
Some designs look close to the Pokemon that eventually shipped, while others look like completely different creatures. That contrast shows how Game Freak moved from rough concepts to final sprites and artwork.
The DVD Shows Development Footage
The surfaced material is more than a simple sprite leak. It includes behind-the-scenes footage from Diamond and Pearl’s two-year development cycle, when Pokemon was moving from the Game Boy Advance era to Nintendo DS.
The beta Pokemon are not being added to a current game, and The Pokemon Company has not announced them as new forms. They are unused development designs from the Diamond and Pearl era.
