Virtua Fighter Crossroads Reveals Lionel Rafale in New Gameplay Trailer
Virtua Fighter Crossroads introduces Lionel Rafale in a new gameplay trailer, showing his fight against Cielo and similarities to series veteran Lion Rafale.
SEGA has revealed Lionel Rafale, a mysterious young martial artist appearing in Virtua Fighter Crossroads, the upcoming fighting adventure from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The character was introduced in a new trailer on October 29, 2026, showing him overpowering story protagonist Cielo during a street fight.
Lionel shares his surname and fighting style with Lion Rafale, the French martial artist introduced in Virtua Fighter 2. However, SEGA describes Lionel as a new character and has not confirmed his connection to the original fighter. The game remains scheduled for release in 2027.
Lionel Rafale shows his fighting skills against Cielo

The new trailer introduces Lionel as a skilled young fighter who has arrived in Vilasapara, the fictional Southeast Asian city where Virtua Fighter Crossroads takes place. The footage shows Lionel confronting Cielo in a street fight. He quickly gains the upper hand, using rapid strikes, kicks, and close-range techniques to overwhelm his opponent.
SEGA describes Lionel as a formidable martial artist whose fighting abilities make him a dangerous opponent. However, the developer has deliberately kept his motivations mysterious. His reason for visiting Vilasapara remains unknown, leaving questions about how he will become involved in Cielo's story.
Lionel's appearance brings back memories of Lion Rafale

Longtime Virtua Fighter fans will recognize similarities between Lionel and Lion Rafale, who first appeared in Virtua Fighter 2 in 1994. Lion became known for his Praying Mantis fighting style, which emphasizes quick attacks, unpredictable movements, and techniques designed to disrupt opponents.
Lionel displays a similar approach in the new trailer, combining fast strikes with powerful throws and close-range attacks. His surname also suggests a possible connection to the established character. However, SEGA has not confirmed whether Lionel is related to Lion Rafale or represents a different version of the fighter.
For now, Lionel is officially presented as a new character appearing in the game's story.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads combines cinematic storytelling with traditional combat
Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Virtua Fighter Crossroads aims to expand the franchise beyond its traditional competitive fighting format.
The game follows four protagonists whose stories intersect in Vilasapara. Players will explore different districts of the city, including its central, entertainment, and resort areas, while completing main missions and side stories.
The narrative also involves underground fighting organizations and a mysterious attacker known as the Bakunawa Killer, who has been targeting martial artists across the city.
Combat will include encounters against multiple opponents and powerful bosses connected to the storyline. These battles are designed to blend traditional fighting mechanics with the game's cinematic narrative.
SEGA has also confirmed a separate Battle Mode featuring one-on-one matches both online and offline. This will allow players to experience the series' familiar competitive combat outside the story campaign.
Virtua Fighter Crossroads was officially unveiled during Summer Game Fest in June 2026. SEGA continues to target a 2027 release but has not announced an exact launch date, supported platforms, or pricing.
