01Overview
The Last of Us Part I is a ground-up remake of the original The Last of Us, faithfully reproducing the story of Joel and Ellie while incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls, enhanced exploration and combat, and expanded accessibility options. In a United States devastated by a fungal outbreak, Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of a military quarantine zone. Their journey develops into a dangerous cross-country trek through abandoned cities and wilderness inhabited by infected creatures and hostile survivors. Players use firearms, melee weapons, stealth, and scavenged resources to survive encounters while exploring environments for supplies and optional story details. Resources can be used to craft items such as health kits, explosives, and weapon upgrades, making exploration important between combat encounters. Players can avoid some enemies through stealth, distract them with thrown objects, or engage directly using limited ammunition and improvised weapons. The remake also includes Left Behind, a story chapter centered on Ellie and her best friend Riley that adds context to events surrounding the main story. Left Behind was rebuilt alongside the main game and is included with every edition of Part I.
