The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an action RPG that follows professional monster slayer Geralt of Rivia amid political unrest in the Northern Kingdoms. After becoming involved in the assassination of a king, Geralt sets out to uncover the conspiracy while dealing with rulers, soldiers, rebels and other witchers. Players explore towns, forests, battlefields and fortified settlements, take on story quests and contracts, investigate monsters and make choices that can significantly change later events. Combat combines sword fighting with dodging, blocking, bombs, traps and Geralt’s magical Signs. Character progression is divided across skill trees focused on swordsmanship, magic, alchemy and general abilities, letting players strengthen the parts of Geralt’s toolkit they use most. Potions, oils and crafted equipment can be prepared to improve his chances against difficult enemies, especially when their weaknesses are known in advance. The story branches heavily, including a major choice that leads to different locations, quests and characters during the middle of the game. Side quests, monster contracts, crafting and optional activities give players additional ways to explore each area between major story missions.
