Free Steam Game Atuel Lets Players Become a River and Put Out Wildfires
Matajuegos' surreal documentary game Atuel lets players explore Argentina's Atuel River Valley through animals and natural elements.
Atuel is a free documentary game where players can become a flowing river, transform into wildlife, and bring rain to burning forests. Developed by Argentine indie studio Matajuegos, the short adventure explores the relationship between nature and the communities living around Argentina's Atuel River Valley.
The game combines surreal landscapes with real interviews about the region's history and environmental challenges. It takes around 30 minutes to complete and is available for free on Steam and itch.io.
Players can become water, clouds, and wildlife

Rather than controlling a traditional character, players explore the environment by taking the form of different animals and natural elements. They can move along the river, fly across the landscape as a bird, or become a cloud to bring rain to areas affected by wildfires.
One sequence involves saving a fox from a forest fire before experiencing the landscape from the animal's perspective. These changes allow players to explore the same environment through different parts of its ecosystem.
Atuel focuses on exploration rather than combat or traditional objectives. Its colourful, dreamlike environments are inspired by the real geography and wildlife of Argentina's Cuyo region.
Real interviews tell the story of the Atuel River

The game uses recordings from historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents to explore the river's importance to the surrounding communities. Their accounts cover its history, the changing environment, and the effects of the climate crisis.
Instead of presenting the information through lengthy explanations, Atuel plays the interviews as players move through its landscapes. The experience also features an ambient soundtrack by Makunouchi Bento, accompanying the different environments and perspectives.
Atuel is free to download on Steam and itch.io
Atuel originally launched on itch.io in September 2022 before arriving on Steam on June 30, 2025. The complete experience is available without payment, although the itch.io version allows optional contributions to support the developers.
Players can download the game through Steam or the official itch.io page. It is also available on Android through Google Play. The documentary interviews feature Spanish-language audio, with subtitles available in English and several other languages.
