Dark Craft blends Souls-style combat with a free-to-play MMO world

October 7, 2026·3 min read

Dark Craft combines deliberate action combat with an open multiplayer world where other players and even human Game Masters can change an encounter.

A new Steam MMO called Dark Craft is drawing attention for combining Souls-style combat with a large multiplayer dark-fantasy world. Developer Take Top Entertainment describes the upcoming PC game as a free-to-play MMORPG where other players can be allies, rivals or another threat waiting to take your loot.

The visual comparisons to Minecraft come largely from Dark Craft's blocky environments and characters rather than an official connection to Mojang's game. Its combat, meanwhile, is built around timing, stamina management and reading enemy attacks, putting the project closer to action RPGs such as Elden Ring.

Dark Craft takes place across an open world filled with forests, abandoned villages, castles and dungeons. Players can explore alone or form groups to hunt enemies, search for rare artifacts and challenge larger bosses.

Combat is designed to punish careless attacks. Take Top says players will need to manage their resources and watch enemy movements rather than relying on the faster ability rotations often found in traditional MMOs.

Other players create another layer of danger. Encounters can lead to cooperation or PvP, and losing a fight can cause players to drop some of the resources they have collected.

The developer has clarified that equipped gear will remain safe after death. Its goal is to make losing resources meaningful without making players too afraid to take risks.

Developers can directly interfere with the world

One of Dark Craft's more unusual ideas involves human Game Masters who can directly change events inside the MMO. Members of the development team will be able to control enemies, arrange ambushes and trigger unusual encounters.

Game Masters can even appear as world bosses or hand out unique quests. Take Top wants these interventions to make the world less predictable, with some events potentially happening only once.

That approach separates Dark Craft from MMOs where most open-world events follow fixed schedules. How often developers will interfere with players, and how the system will remain fair during competitive encounters, has not yet been explained.

Dark Craft is still early enough to change

Take Top has been unusually open about how unfinished the project remains. The developer says combat, mechanics, visual style and even the structure of the world can still be changed before release.

Players have been invited to suggest features they would like to see in a Souls-style MMO. Take Top has also said it wants to avoid the repetitive grinding associated with some traditional MMORPGs, although it has not yet explained its full progression or endgame systems.

The Steam listing confirms online co-op, PvP, achievements and in-game purchases. It also lists chance-based purchases, but Take Top has not detailed how the game's monetization will work.

A release date has not been announced

Dark Craft is currently announced only for Windows PC through Steam and will be free to play. Its store page lists a 40 GB storage requirement and Easy Anti-Cheat, but no console editions have been announced.

Take Top has also not provided a launch window or public testing date. Dark Craft can currently be wishlisted on Steam while development continues, with the studio promising more gameplay details as the project moves closer to release.
