Gears of War: E-Day Hit by DDoS Attack as Players Report Connection Problems
DDoS attacks disrupted Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer and logins shortly after launch. The Coalition confirmed the cause, while Xbox Support reported services restored on October 12.
Gears of War: E-Day has been targeted by distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, causing login failures, unexpected disconnects, and other disruptions to its online services.
Developer The Coalition confirmed the attacks in a statement published on October 12, following complaints from players who had struggled to access multiplayer matches over the weekend.
The disruption comes just days after the game's October 6 launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Coalition said it was monitoring and mitigating the attacks, while Xbox Support subsequently confirmed that the game's online services had returned to normal on October 12.
Players encounter matchmaking problems and unexpected disconnects

Reports of connection problems began circulating on October 11, with players struggling to enter multiplayer matches or remain connected after joining. Some also experienced login failures that prevented them from accessing the game's online features.
MP1st reported similar problems during its own testing. The outlet was unable to access online modes and encountered synchronization errors when attempting to load campaign save data.
It managed to continue the single-player campaign by launching the game offline on PC. However, some players reported difficulties accessing their campaign progress even when attempting to play offline. The Coalition has not disclosed how many players were affected or identified any regions or platforms experiencing particularly severe problems.
The Coalition confirms DDoS attacks targeted online services

In a statement shared through the official Gears Community account on X, The Coalition confirmed that the disruptions were caused by malicious traffic targeting the game's online infrastructure.
"These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services," the studio said. A DDoS attack attempts to overwhelm an online service with large volumes of traffic, making it difficult for legitimate users to connect.
The Coalition has not identified those responsible or provided technical details about the attacks. The developer also has not reported any compromise of player accounts or personal information. Its public statement concerns the availability of online services.
Xbox Support confirms services have returned to normal
The studio initially reported that a login issue had been resolved on October 11. However, further connection problems were reported afterward, before The Coalition confirmed that DDoS attacks were responsible for the disruptions.
Following that confirmation, the developer said its teams were continuing to monitor and mitigate the attacks.
Xbox Support subsequently announced on October 12 that service for Gears of War: E-Day was back to normal. The official Gears of War service status dashboard also listed login, matchmaking, store, post-match, and progression services as healthy.
The Coalition has not explained what mitigation measures were implemented or announced a separate game patch to address the disruption. The studio said it would provide further updates if significant changes occurred.
Players can check the official Gears of War service status page for any further incidents. Although online services were reported restored, the company has not confirmed whether those responsible have permanently stopped their attacks.
