GTA 6 is leaning on one of GTA 5's biggest strengths with Jason's supporting cast

October 7, 2026·3 min read

Jason’s relationships with Cal Hampton and Brian Heder give GTA 6 another connection to GTA 5’s character-driven approach to building its criminal world.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 nearing launch, Rockstar's confirmed character lineup suggests Jason Duval will enter Vice City with more than Lucia at his side. His life in the Leonida Keys is already tied to several allies, bringing back one of GTA 5's strengths: memorable supporting characters who give each protagonist their own world.

Rockstar describes Jason as a former Army soldier who returned to crime and began working for local drug runners. His relationships with Brian Heder and Cal Hampton give that background more personality than a simple character biography.

Cal Hampton gives Jason his own longtime friend

Cal Hampton is one of the characters most closely connected to Jason. Rockstar describes him as Jason's friend and another associate of Brian, although he prefers drinking beer and monitoring Coast Guard communications over chasing bigger criminal opportunities.

That relationship recalls the friendships that helped define GTA 5's protagonists. Franklin had Lamar Davis, while Trevor was surrounded by characters such as Ron Jakowski and Wade Hebert.

Cal does not appear to directly replace any of them. His conspiracy theories and habit of listening to Coast Guard traffic instead give Jason his own distinctive connection within Leonida.

Brian Heder connects Jason to the criminal world

Brian Heder adds another layer to Jason's life before the main story brings him closer to Lucia. Rockstar presents Brian as an experienced smuggler who now owns a boat yard and lets younger criminals handle much of the dangerous work.

Jason works for Brian and lives in one of his properties without paying rent as long as he helps with the operation. That gives Jason an established criminal network before the larger events of GTA 6 begin.

The relationship could also help make the Leonida Keys feel like Jason's home rather than just another part of the map. His connections there give Rockstar room to build missions and conflicts outside his partnership with Lucia.

GTA 6 has a wider cast around its two leads

Jason and Lucia remain the center of the story, but Rockstar has already introduced several characters connected to different parts of Leonida. Raul Bautista, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest and rap duo Real Dimez expand the cast across robbery, nightlife, music and the local criminal economy.

That variety was important to GTA 5. Michael, Franklin and Trevor each had their own allies and contacts, letting Rockstar move between different parts of Los Santos without making the world feel disconnected.

Jason and Lucia still have a tighter connection

GTA 6 reduces the number of playable protagonists from three to two, but Jason and Lucia appear much more closely linked. Rockstar says a failed score leaves them caught in a wider conspiracy and forces them to rely on each other.

The supporting cast could keep that more focused story from feeling narrow. Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Jason's wider role in Leonida still waiting to be fully revealed.
