Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 PS5 and Xbox Series Versions Briefly Appear in ESRB Listings

October 8, 2026·3 min read

Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition have appeared in new ESRB listings for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, suggesting current-gen versions are being prepared.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition appear to be getting PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions after new ESRB records briefly listed both games for current-generation consoles.

The now-removed ratings were separate from the existing ESRB entries for the 2020 Definitive Editions, which only list PS4 and Xbox One among their console platforms. 2K and Hangar 13 have not announced the new versions, so their release dates and technical improvements remain unknown.

The ratings point to new current-gen versions

The new ESRB records specifically identify PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series rather than simply reflecting the games' existing backward compatibility.

At present, Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are still sold as PS4 and Xbox One releases. Both launched in May 2020 as part of the wider Mafia: Trilogy rollout, with Mafia II remastering the 2010 game and Mafia III: Definitive Edition bundling the base game with its previously released DLC.

The ratings do not reveal whether the prospective PS5 and Xbox Series releases are full native ports, enhanced editions of the existing builds, or another form of current-gen upgrade.

There is recent precedent for 2K revisiting the trilogy on newer hardware.

Mafia: Definitive Edition received dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support on August 14, 2026. The upgraded version added 60 FPS gameplay, increased resolution, faster loading, and fixes for several older issues.

Eligible owners also received a digital current-gen version without an additional purchase, although the rules differed depending on platform and whether the previous copy was physical or digital.

Its own PS5 and Xbox Series ESRB record appeared before that release, making the new Mafia II and Mafia III listings more notable than an isolated ratings-board update. The same technical treatment is not guaranteed, however.

60 FPS and free upgrades have not been confirmed

The ESRB records do not include performance details. 2K has not confirmed 60 FPS support, better resolution, faster loading, or other technical changes.

There is also no confirmation that existing PS4 and Xbox One owners would receive the newer versions for free. The upgrade policy used for Mafia: Definitive Edition shows one possible approach, but it does not establish the rules for the other two games.

For now, the ratings are evidence that new PS5 and Xbox Series versions of Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are being prepared. Exactly what 2K plans to change, and when those versions could arrive, remains unannounced.
