Metro Redux Gets Free Next-Gen Update as Series Hits 50 Million Sales
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting free next-gen upgrades this October as the wider Metro series passes 50 million copies sold.
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting a free next-gen update this month, more than a decade after the two remasters were released. The update arrives October 22 on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, followed by PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and the Windows Store version on October 29, with existing owners receiving the upgrade for free.
4A Games and Deep Silver announced the update alongside a major milestone for the wider series, confirming that Metro games have now sold 50 million copies worldwide. The figure covers the franchise as a whole since Metro 2033 launched 16 years ago.
Metro Redux is getting native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions

Both Redux games will receive 4K textures, improved animation fidelity and audio, richer environmental detail, community-requested bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements. 4A Games says the original look of the games has been preserved rather than rebuilt for the update.
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the update introduces native versions capable of native 4K at 60 FPS or upscaled 4K at 120 FPS with compatible displays. Console players will also get improved lighting, shadows and particle effects, hardware tessellation and displacement, alongside DualSense adaptive trigger support on PS5 and impulse trigger support on Xbox.
PlayStation 5 Pro adds PSSR support, while Xbox Series X supports TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing. Xbox versions also gain spatial audio, Xbox Play Anywhere and support for Xbox handheld devices. PC players will receive DLSS and spatial audio support alongside the broader fixes and improvements.
4A Games is not treating the update as another remaster

Despite the visual and performance improvements, 4A Games is explicitly describing this as an upgrade rather than another remaster or remake. The games have not been moved to the current version of the 4A Engine, and the studio says it has no current plans to remaster or remake the older Metro titles.
Ray tracing is also absent. According to the official FAQ, implementing it would require a much deeper reworking of the renderer, which is not currently practical while the team is developing Metro 2039.
The complete patch notes will be published when the update launches, so additional technical changes and platform-specific improvements have yet to be detailed.
PC players get the update one week before consoles
Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG users will receive the update first on October 22. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and the Windows Store version follow on October 29. The console update is scheduled to arrive in Japan separately in November.
The upgrade will be free for people who already own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux, while new purchases will include the updated versions. Nintendo Switch is not part of the rollout.
The announcement gives the older games another update ahead of Metro 2039, which is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027. With the franchise now past 50 million copies sold, the Redux upgrade arrives as 4A Games prepares to move the series forward with its next mainline release.
