Mafia 3 gets free PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrade for its 10th anniversary

October 12, 2026·3 min read

Mafia 3's tenth anniversary brings native current-generation console versions, offering 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements at no extra cost to existing owners.

2K is celebrating Mafia 3's tenth anniversary with native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Mafia III: Definitive Edition. Existing owners can upgrade to the current-generation release for free, while PC players have received a separate update containing bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

The new console versions arrive almost exactly 10 years after Mafia 3 originally launched on October 7, 2016. They are available now alongside a franchise sale that heavily discounts the game across participating storefronts.

The biggest improvement on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is support for 60 FPS gameplay. Most cinematics rendered in real time also run at 60 FPS, although pre-rendered movie sequences remain at 30 FPS.

2K has also addressed several technical problems carried over from the older versions. Trophy and Achievement tracking has been improved, while fixes target situations where players could become stuck at checkpoints, during cutscenes or while completing objectives across the campaign and DLC.

Visual improvements focus on lighting, textures and vegetation streaming. The update also reduces visual artifacts and pop-in while improving animation reliability during some cutscenes.

Existing owners can upgrade for free

Players who already own Mafia III: Definitive Edition on the previous generation can access the corresponding PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version without buying the game again. The new releases are separate current-generation versions rather than simply backward-compatible copies running with a higher frame-rate cap.

Definitive Edition includes the complete base game along with all three story expansions: Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times. The Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack are also included.

The anniversary release continues 2K's effort to update games included in Mafia: The Omertà Collection for newer hardware. The publisher has not announced an equivalent current-generation release for Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

Steam players have received their own anniversary patch rather than a new version of the game. It addresses several missions where progression could break, including "Get Enzo Conti," "Kill Tommy Marcano" and parts of the Epilogue.

Achievement progress should also be less likely to disappear when closing the game mid-session. Other changes improve NPC behavior, checkpoints, weapon upgrades, vehicle spawning and overall stability.

PC players also receive additional frame-rate limit options at 120, 144, 180 and 240 FPS. Multi-monitor support, windowed mode behavior, lighting, UI elements, subtitles and crosshair functionality have received further fixes.

Mafia franchise sale runs until October 22

The anniversary update coincides with a Mafia franchise promotion on Steam. Mafia III: Definitive Edition is currently 80% off at $5.99, down from its regular $29.99 price, with the offer ending October 22.

Other franchise bundles are discounted during the promotion as well. With the native console versions and PC patch now live, the tenth anniversary gives returning players a substantially updated way to revisit Lincoln Clay's campaign in New Bordeaux.
