Monster Hunter Wilds gets free demo more than a year after launch

Capcom has released a free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. It arrived on August 5, 2026, more than 17 months after the full game launched on February 28, 2025.

The late demo gives new players a way to test the opening of Wilds without buying it. Capcom has not announced an end date for the trial.

The Prologue Demo starts at the beginning of the game and runs through the “To the Forest” mission in Chapter 1-3. Players can use the full character creator and try all 14 weapon types during the available story content.

The store listing uses story progress as the cutoff rather than a playtime limit. That gives players room to explore the opening areas, learn the combat systems, and compare weapons before reaching the end of the trial.

The demo only supports Offline Mode. Online features are disabled, so players cannot form multiplayer hunting parties or test the full game’s cross-platform cooperative play.

That restriction keeps the trial focused on the story, basic hunts, and weapon testing. It also means the demo does not show how Wilds handles multiplayer, which remains a core part of the complete game.

Progress made in the Prologue Demo can transfer into the full version. Players do not need to finish the demo before moving their save, and Awards earned during the trial can also carry across.

There is one restriction for existing owners. Demo data cannot be imported if the player already has save data for the full game. Award-related achievements also do not unlock inside the demo, even when their conditions are completed.

The release comes alongside a permanent price reduction for the base game and a revised set of digital bundles. Capcom has also launched a Gold Edition containing the game and its Cosmetic DLC Collection while retiring the earlier Deluxe and Premium Deluxe bundles.

A playable trial gives PC users a way to check performance on their own hardware after Wilds received repeated optimization and stability work during its first year. Capcom is continuing the game with Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a paid expansion scheduled for 2027, while the Prologue Demo is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
