World of Warcraft: Forever beta extended as players prepare to lose their characters

October 22, 2026·3 min read

Blizzard extends the World of Warcraft: Forever beta until October 23, giving players two extra days before character wipes ahead of the November 4 launch.

Blizzard has extended the World of Warcraft: Forever beta by two days, giving players until October 23 before its characters and progress disappear ahead of launch.

The beta had originally been scheduled to finish on October 21. Blizzard now plans to shut it down at 10 a.m. PDT on Friday, October 23, following this week's open stress test on the regional hardware that will support the finished game.

Blizzard temporarily took the regular beta offline on October 21 while running a separate stress test open to anyone with a World of Warcraft account. No active subscription, existing beta invitation or purchased access was required to participate.

Characters created specifically for the stress test are deleted once that test ends, after which the normal beta returns for its final stretch. Blizzard had previously described October 21 as the last full day of testing, making the October 23 shutdown a genuine two-day extension rather than a clarification of the original schedule.

The extension follows unusually heavy interest throughout the test. Zero1Gaming previously reported that Blizzard increased the beta population cap multiple times after developers encountered stronger-than-expected demand.

Hunter players are saying goodbye to their beta pets

The extra time does not change what happens when testing ends. Beta characters and their progress will not transfer into the November release, leaving players to start again when World of Warcraft: Forever officially launches.

That reset is hitting some Hunters particularly hard because the class retains the older-style pet system built around taming, training and developing individual companions. Blizzard has expanded that system in Forever with 18 pet families, family-specific abilities and revised pet mechanics, giving players plenty of reason to become attached to individual animals during testing.

Community members have consequently been sharing farewells to Hunter pets they spent the beta leveling and using. Those companions will disappear alongside the rest of the test characters when Blizzard closes the servers, even though players can attempt to tame the same creatures again after launch.

Hunter pets have changed repeatedly during testing

Hunters have also been among the classes receiving frequent adjustments during the beta. Recent builds changed abilities belonging to Crocolisks, Bats and Birds of Prey while fixing pet critical-strike inheritance and allowing pets to benefit properly from Expertise.

Players have reported separate problems involving pets losing abilities, training-point resets affecting attack-speed passives and other inconsistencies. Blizzard has continued addressing Hunter issues throughout testing, reinforcing why the beta characters themselves cannot simply be treated as finished launch versions.

World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4

World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4 and will be included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Blizzard describes it as a permanent version of Azeroth rather than a temporary Classic season, with new quests, dungeons, raids and other content planned after release.

Before that happens, early name reservations will run from October 27 through November 3 for eligible upgrade owners. Beta players therefore have only a short break between saying goodbye to their test characters on October 23 and preparing the versions they intend to keep.
