The 12 Best Single-Player Games

August 18, 2026·8 min read

Agent 47 stands calmly before a large explosion in Hitman World of Assassination, highlighting the game's cinematic assassination action.

Agent 47 can spend ten minutes watching a target's routine before moving. A live teammate might make that silence awkward, but Hitman uses it as preparation. Single-player games can give you room to think or let you repeat a boss until every swing makes sense.

That freedom covers very different experiences. A run of Slay the Spire may end in under an hour, while Mass Effect carries one commander across three games. To qualify here, the solo experience had to feel complete rather than like a multiplayer mode with the other seats empty.

12. Hitman World of Assassination

Hitman World of Assassination puts Agent 47 inside crowded locations and gives him a target to kill. Reaching that target without causing a panic is where the game opens up. In Sapienza, a waiter disguise gets 47 near the mansion. The conversations he overhears there reveal how its owner might be isolated.

A failed attempt teaches you which guard checks credentials or where a target pauses alone. Mission Stories offer guidance, though they can make early runs feel overly directed. Turn those prompts off and each map rewards patient observation.

11. Slay the Spire

Mega Crit

In Slay the Spire, every fight adds another decision to a deck that must survive three acts. Taking a powerful card is tempting, but drawing it at the wrong time may block the defense you need.

Removing a basic Strike at a shop can improve every future hand. Enemy intent appears before each turn, so a loss rarely feels arbitrary. The harder Ascension levels expose weak plans quickly, even if some relic combinations are much stronger than others.

10. Hollow Knight

The Knight faces a giant armored boss during a Hollow Knight battle
Team Cherry

Hollow Knight is a 2D action game about exploring Hallownest, a ruined underground kingdom. New movement abilities turn old dead ends into routes, while the Nail's short reach keeps early fights dangerous. The Mantis Lords demand clean movement before they allow much room to attack.

The map only fills in after the Knight buys a quill and rests at a bench, and the Wayward Compass occupies a charm slot. Dying leaves Geo with the Knight's Shade, which can turn a long return trip into another loss. That friction suits the lonely setting, though it makes the first hours harsher than they need to be.

9. Resident Evil 4

Capcom

The 2023 version of Resident Evil 4 follows Leon Kennedy into rural Spain to rescue the president's daughter. Limited ammunition matters because enemies rarely approach one at a time. A shot to the knee creates an opening for a kick that can clear enough space to escape. The remake's knife can parry most attacks, including a chainsaw, but each block consumes durability.

Repairing it at the Merchant then competes with weapon upgrades for money. The late island section leans too heavily on prolonged firefights, yet the village and castle keep making small rooms feel unsafe.

8. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Sandfall Interactive

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG about an expedition sent to kill the Paintress, whose yearly number erases everyone of that age. Commands are selected from a menu, but enemy turns require real-time responses. Dodging offers a generous escape. A successful parry has tighter timing, then pays back Ability Points and can lead to a counterattack.

That risk keeps routine battles active. Use a Picto in four fights and its passive becomes a Lumina that other characters can equip. An early perk can remain useful without occupying one of three Picto slots. Late damage scaling becomes difficult to read, and the stiff jumping is much less convincing than the battles.

7. Portal 2

Valve

Portal 2 is a first-person puzzle game in which Chell links two surfaces with a portal gun. Momentum carries through the pair. A drop into one opening can therefore launch Chell across a gap from the other, and the best chambers let you understand that flight a moment before committing to it.

The campaign uses Aperture itself to teach. Early rooms show exactly what a laser or light bridge can do. Old Aperture replaces tidy chambers with industrial shafts, forcing Chell to find the few surfaces that accept portals. Later, Wheatley's poorly assembled tests put working puzzle parts inside rooms that are falling apart. His dialogue reveals his panic when the chambers stop behaving as expected. The puzzles are not especially difficult, but their order makes nearly every solution feel earned.

6. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

ZA/UM

There is a body hanging behind a hostel in Disco Elysium, and the detective assigned to the case has forgotten his own name. Investigation happens through conversations and skill checks instead of combat. His 24 skills also speak to him. Authority may demand that he dominate a witness, while Inland Empire finds meaning in something ordinary.

Failure often changes a scene rather than ending it. A bad attempt to avoid a bill can leave the detective on the floor after an embarrassing leap. That outcome becomes part of who he is. Ideas placed in the Thought Cabinet can alter later dialogue. Some political discussions run longer than the case requires, but Revachol is full of people worth hearing out.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo

Breath of the Wild gives Link the tools to manipulate Hyrule before he leaves the Great Plateau, then trusts you to decide where they matter. A metal slab can bridge a river. Shrines accept improvised solutions that their designers probably never intended. Long rides pass without a companion explaining the landscape.

The sparse piano leaves space for hoofbeats or a distant Guardian. Weapon durability is irritating when a favorite blade breaks, though it prevents one early discovery from making every later weapon irrelevant.

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games

Rockstar's western follows Arthur Morgan as the Van der Linde gang tries to outrun the end of the outlaw era. The main story is a long retreat, but Arthur becomes most convincing between robberies. Sitting down for coffee may prompt another gang member to talk around a problem that has been bothering them.

Those routines give the camp a history that the plot can eventually break apart. Arthur's honor changes how he responds to people as illness forces him to reconsider his life. Missions are far less flexible. Leave the intended path during a chase and a failure screen often appears, even when the alternative should work.

3. Elden Ring

FromSoftware

Elden Ring sends a Tarnished through the Lands Between with little more than a destination marked by golden grace. Its action RPG combat asks for careful timing, and major enemies punish panic. Margit holds attacks just long enough to catch an early roll. Once that delay becomes familiar, a fight that seemed chaotic starts to show its rhythm.

Solo play does not mean accepting one fixed level of difficulty. Spirit Ashes can draw a boss's attention, while a new weapon may reward a different set of attributes. The open world also provides an answer when one encounter becomes a wall. A nearby mine may contain the smithing stones needed to make a neglected weapon viable. Character questlines are needlessly easy to lose because crucial steps may happen far from the last meeting.

2. Baldur's Gate 3

Two Baldur's Gate 3 party members explore the rocky Ravaged Beach
Larian Studios

Baldur's Gate 3 adapts tabletop role-playing into a campaign where one person directs a four-member party. Combat runs in turns, so a fighter can shove an enemy off a ledge after a wizard's spell moves them into place. Companions also interrupt conversations and remember decisions they disagree with.

Controlling the whole group makes preparation rewarding. The party can separate before a fight, placing an archer above the room while someone else begins the conversation below. Turn-based mode freezes patrols during the setup.

The interface struggles once inventories fill, and the final act has enough competing quests to lose momentum. Few RPGs respond so thoroughly when a sensible idea falls outside the obvious solution.

Baldur's Gate III

An ancient evil has returned to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out. The fate of Faerun lies in your hands. Alone, you may resist. But together, you can overcome.

1. Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Mass Effect Legendary Edition artwork featuring Shepard and squad members
BioWare

Mass Effect Legendary Edition collects Commander Shepard's fight against the Reapers across three action RPGs. Missions combine cover-based shooting with squad powers, but the larger appeal lies aboard the Normandy. After an operation, crew members have new opinions. Checking in turns a military ship into a place whose absences are immediately noticeable.

A save file carries Shepard into the next game along with major decisions. A squadmate who survived Virmire may fill a role years later. The handling of the genophage can reshape an alliance when the war reaches its worst point. The first game's empty planets and the third game's ending still show their age.

By the Normandy's final approach, Shepard is surrounded by choices made across dozens of hours. Some consequences arrive much later than expected. Others are visible in the person standing beside the command table. The trilogy has the continuity of a long-running tabletop group without needing anyone else in the room.
