Counter-Strike 2 Player Count Falls for Seventh Straight Month
Counter-Strike 2 averaged 805,638 concurrent Steam players in September, extending its monthly decline to seven straight months despite a higher peak player count.
Counter-Strike 2 recorded another drop in its average player count in September 2026, extending a decline that has now lasted seven consecutive months. Steam Charts recorded an average of 805,637.82 concurrent players for September, down 2.38% from 825,257.80 in August.
The decline began after February, when Counter-Strike 2 averaged 1,084,094.59 concurrent players. September's figure is roughly 278,000 lower, a drop of about 25.7% from that February average. Dust2.us, which examined the historical trend, reports that seven straight monthly declines is the longest such run across CS:GO and Counter-Strike 2.
CS2 has lost average players every month since February

Steam Charts shows a steady month-by-month decline following February's 2026 high. The average dropped to roughly 1.07 million in March and 974,786 in April, before falling below 900,000 for the first time in the current run during July. August followed at 825,258 before September pushed the monthly average down to 805,638.
September was also well below the same month a year earlier. Counter-Strike 2 averaged 925,940 players in September 2025, putting the latest figure about 120,000 lower year over year. The last completed month with a lower average was February 2024, when Steam Charts recorded 786,631 concurrent players.
The size of the monthly losses has varied considerably. April produced the steepest decline of the current seven-month run at 8.83%, followed by July at 6.92%. September's 2.38% decrease was comparatively smaller, but it was enough to keep the uninterrupted downward trend going.
September's peak player count moved in the opposite direction

The lower monthly average does not mean every measure of activity declined. Counter-Strike 2 reached a September peak of 1,450,705 concurrent players, up from August's peak of 1,331,274.
That peak was recorded on September 23, one day after Valve released a substantial update introducing Rush, a queued 3v3 mode built around teams advancing through a series of battle arenas. The September 22 update also changed Premier map selection, introduced silent reloading, removed the sound made when unscoping sniper rifles, and included other gameplay changes.
Valve followed it with additional Rush, crosshair, and bug-fix updates over the next several days. September's higher peak shows that the game was still capable of drawing considerably more than one million concurrent players even as its average activity continued to fall. The player data alone does not establish that the update caused the temporary increase.
The seven-month slide follows a strong start to 2026
The current run looks more notable when compared with how the year began. January averaged 1,070,444 concurrent players, up 8% from December 2025, before February climbed another 1.28% to 1,084,095. Every completed month since then has finished lower than the previous one.
That still leaves Counter-Strike 2 with a large active audience. September's monthly peak exceeded 1.45 million players, while the average remained above 800,000 despite seven months of declines. The next completed monthly figures will show whether September was the bottom of the current run or whether the slide extends into an eighth month.
