Diablo 5 Is Coming in Spring 2029 to a Sanctuary Where Diablo Won

September 15, 2026·3 min read

Blizzard has officially revealed Diablo V for Spring 2029, with the next mainline action RPG beginning in a version of Sanctuary where the heroes have already lost.

The sequel takes place roughly 100 years after Diablo IV. Diablo has conquered Sanctuary, towns and traditional safe spaces have disappeared, and players will travel with a moving caravan while trying to reclaim parts of a world already devastated by the Lord of Terror.

Blizzard introduced Diablo V during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony with a different starting point from previous games. Instead of arriving while Sanctuary is under threat and trying to prevent its destruction, players enter after Diablo has already won.

The heroes who previously defended Sanctuary are gone, while Diablo himself returns as a central character rather than simply appearing as a final threat. Players take the role of the Heir to Westmarch, who has a mysterious connection to Diablo and is trying to reclaim a kingdom that has become an outpost of Hell.

PC Gamer reported from Blizzard's subsequent Diablo V panel that the story begins around a century after Diablo IV. Much of the campaign will involve trying to restore the western continent and Westmarch after Diablo's conquest.

The Spring 2029 window gives Blizzard several years to develop that premise. The studio has already stressed that many of the systems shown or discussed at BlizzCon remain works in progress and could change before release.

Towns are being replaced by a traveling caravan

The fallen Sanctuary is also changing how players move through the world. Blizzard told attendees that traditional towns will not function as the familiar safe areas seen throughout earlier Diablo games.

Players will instead build a caravan of characters encountered during the campaign. That group travels alongside the player, with side quests coming from members of the caravan rather than being gathered from static settlements across the map.

One of those companions is planned to be a treasure goblin, although Blizzard has not yet detailed how every caravan member will function.

The wider world is also moving back toward procedural generation. Both dungeons and open-world regions are planned to change between visits, a notable shift from Diablo IV's more fixed open-world structure.

Those systems connect directly to the setting rather than existing as isolated changes. A ruined Sanctuary without functioning towns gives the wandering caravan a role in both progression and storytelling while keeping players moving through territory controlled by Diablo.

Blizzard is planning more classes and a different approach to loot

Blizzard has already confirmed several parts of Diablo V's class lineup. Demon Hunter and Monk are returning, while one of the new options is the Plague Knight, a heavily armored class built around spreading disease across the battlefield.

The studio says the sequel is planned to launch with the largest selection of classes yet offered at the start of a Diablo game.

Gear will move through tiers that become more complicated as players progress, while belts and set items are returning. Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on equipment, and some items will occupy multiple inventory spaces depending on their size, recalling systems used in Diablo II.

With the game still targeting 2029, none of those systems should be treated as final. Blizzard says development updates will begin arriving regularly in 2027, giving the team time to adjust classes, loot, and world design based on feedback before launch.
