Diablo IV Has No More Expansions Planned Ahead of Diablo V

Blizzard does not currently have another Diablo IV expansion planned after Lord of Hatred, with the development team instead preparing to continue the game through seasonal updates as work progresses toward Diablo V.

Game director Brent Gibson confirmed the current direction at BlizzCon 2026, where Blizzard also revealed that Diablo V is targeting spring 2029. Diablo IV is not being left behind in the meantime, with Gibson saying the team still expects to support it for a long time and has plenty of room to continue its story through seasons.

Gibson told PC Gamer at BlizzCon that no additional Diablo IV expansions are planned at the moment. That makes Lord of Hatred the final expansion on Blizzard's current roadmap, following Vessel of Hatred. The studio is now concentrating on seasonal development for Diablo IV alongside production of its sequel.

The wording is important. Blizzard has not declared that another expansion can never happen, only that there is nothing beyond Lord of Hatred presently planned.

Gibson said the team considers the 'Story of Hatred' told through Diablo IV to have reached its conclusion with Mephisto, with Blizzard now moving toward the 'Story of Terror' through future seasonal storytelling.

Blizzard has already established a substantial gap between the two games that can be explored before the sequel arrives. Diablo V takes place roughly 100 years after Diablo IV, in a version of Sanctuary where Diablo has won and the world has undergone major changes. Blizzard has not explained every event that leads from one game to the other.

Gibson said that gap leaves room for additional storytelling through Diablo IV seasons. Rather than locking the game into a fixed narrative path years in advance, the team can continue developing seasonal stories while responding to how players engage with them.

The existing roadmap shows that support continuing beyond Lord of Hatred. Blizzard has already begun its 30th-anniversary seasonal content, while the Amazon is scheduled to join Diablo IV as a playable class during the first half of 2027.

That gives Blizzard several years between the current game's latest expansion and the planned arrival of Diablo V without requiring another full expansion to carry the story forward.

The announcement of Diablo V does not mean Blizzard intends to wind down Diablo IV immediately. Gibson said the studio plans to support the game for "a very long time," pointing to Blizzard's history of maintaining older Diablo titles even after newer entries arrive.

Exactly what that support will include beyond the currently announced seasons and class additions has not been detailed. Blizzard has also not given Diablo IV a final season or end-of-support date.

For now, the direction is clearer than it was before BlizzCon. Lord of Hatred is the last expansion Blizzard currently plans to make for Diablo IV, while seasonal updates will carry the game forward as development continues on Diablo V.
