Diablo V will fully support multiplayer

September 15, 2026·3 min read
Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo V will support both solo and multiplayer play when it launches in spring 2029. Senior game director Joe Shely told PC Gamer that players will be able to approach the game alone or with friends, continuing one of the series' established options.

The confirmation answers one question about Blizzard's newly announced sequel, but several details remain undecided or unannounced. In particular, Blizzard has not confirmed whether Diablo V will use the same shared-world approach introduced in Diablo IV.

Blizzard plans to let friends play through the full game together

Shely discussed multiplayer during a group interview following Diablo V's reveal at BlizzCon 2026. He said the game is designed to support solo and multiplayer play, adding that “you should be able to play all of the content with your friends.”

That suggests cooperative play will extend throughout the game rather than being limited to specific activities. Blizzard has not yet explained party sizes, matchmaking, multiplayer progression, or whether any activities will require other players.

The studio has also stopped short of saying whether players will regularly encounter strangers while exploring. Diablo IV allows players to meet others across its open world and take part in activities such as world events and bosses without forming a party first.

Diablo V's changing world could affect how multiplayer works

One major difference already confirmed for Diablo V is its procedural approach to Sanctuary. Blizzard says terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when players return to an area, reflecting a world being reshaped under Diablo's control.

That structure leaves an important question around how different players will share the same world. Blizzard has not said whether each player or group will experience its own version of Sanctuary or whether the game will maintain persistent shared spaces similar to Diablo IV.

The sequel will also move players through the ruined Western Continent alongside a traveling caravan of survivors. Towns and reclaimed strongholds will no longer serve the same role, giving Blizzard another reason to handle player encounters differently from the current game.

Blizzard will reveal more during development

Diablo V is still early in development and is scheduled for spring 2029. Blizzard has already said it plans to begin sharing regular development updates in 2027 as its ideas for the sequel continue to take shape.

Those updates should provide a clearer picture of how multiplayer fits alongside the game's procedural world. For now, Blizzard has confirmed that playing with friends remains part of Diablo V, while the shared-world systems surrounding that multiplayer are still being kept under wraps.
