Rockstar gives free GTA 5 upgrades before the next GTA Online heist
June 18, 2026·4 min read
Rockstar is giving more last-gen GTA 5 players a free move to the newer console versions. Starting June 18, anyone who owns a PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V can upgrade to the PS5 version for free, while Xbox players can upgrade for free if they own the digital Xbox One version.
The timing is useful for players who have moved to newer hardware but continue playing the older release. GTA Online: The Kortz Center Heist arrives in July, and the free upgrade lets more players enter that update through the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions instead of staying on the older builds.
Who gets the free upgrade
The free upgrade is simple on PlayStation. If you own any PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V, you can move to the PS5 version at no extra cost. Rockstar says it applies to the digital Xbox One version, so players with physical Xbox One copies should not assume they are included unless Rockstar says more.
This update is helpful because the newer console versions were previously sold separately. Players who skipped the upgrade price now have a free way to move forward.
The newer version has the better GTA Online setup
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions bring faster loading, better performance options, and visual improvements. They also give GTA Online players access to features that are not part of the older console versions.
Hao’s Special Works is the main gameplay addition tied to the newer versions. It adds upgraded vehicles, races, time trials, and car-focused content made for the stronger hardware.
Career Progress also makes it easier for players to track rewards across different parts of GTA Online. For anyone coming back after a long break, that system makes it easier to see what they have done and what rewards are still waiting.
The July heist is the real reason to move now
Rockstar’s next major GTA Online update is The Kortz Center Heist. The new job sends players after artwork at the Kortz Center in Pacific Bluffs, with planning tied to a new Mansion Art Studio.
The heist can be played solo or with a crew. Many players no longer have the same regular group they played with during the early years of GTA Online, making solo support a useful addition.
Moving to the newer console version before July gives players the best version of the game before the heist goes live. It also makes the upgrade feel less like a bonus and more like preparation for the next big update.
GTA 6 makes the timing harder to ignore
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One, so Rockstar already has a clear future on newer consoles.
That does not mean the older GTA Online versions are ending right now. The Kortz Center Heist is still coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in July.
Even so, the free upgrade shows where Rockstar wants more players to be. The company is giving older GTA 5 owners a way to move before the next heist and before GTA 6 takes over the year.
This is good timing for returning players
The free upgrade is most useful for people who bought GTA 5 years ago, skipped the newer version, and still want one more reason to return to Los Santos. They can move their progress forward, play with better performance, and try the July heist without buying the game again.
Rockstar is also making the move at a smart time. A free current-gen upgrade, a new heist, and the November release of Grand Theft Auto VI give old players a clear path from GTA 5 to the next game.
