RuneFest 2026 reveals fourth RuneScape MMO and major 2027 roadmaps

October 5, 2026·3 min read

Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to map out the franchise's next year while confirming a new Unreal Engine MMO is now in development.

Jagex has announced a fourth RuneScape MMO alongside major 2027 roadmaps for RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The announcements came during RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham as the franchise marked its 25th anniversary.

The new MMO is still early in development and does not yet have an official title or release window. Jagex says it will use Unreal Engine and aims to bring Gielinor to a new generation while keeping the freedom and community-driven approach associated with the series.

The unnamed project was the biggest new game announcement from RuneFest. Jagex described it as a completely new MMO rather than an update or replacement for one of its existing games.

Few gameplay details have been revealed. The studio has confirmed Unreal Engine development but has not announced platforms, a release window or whether existing RuneScape accounts will connect to the new game.

RuneScape Reignited launches in December

The current version of RuneScape will enter a new phase called RuneScape Reignited on December 2. Jagex says the update will introduce a Remastered Journey, Adventure Guide, a refreshed economy and new high scores.

Full Reignited access will be available without membership from December 2 through December 12. A long-awaited Plugin API is also scheduled to launch in October.

The 2027 roadmap will then move through three major story arcs. Hoard of Dragons begins in January, while City of Gnomes continues one of the game's longest-running storylines and Secrets of Karamja introduces a new endgame raid.

Old School RuneScape finally opens Menaphos

Old School RuneScape will receive The Fractured Archive raid on October 20. The new endgame activity takes players beneath Gielinor and includes a boss-rush structure with new high-level rewards.

Hardcore Worlds will follow on November 4 with a separate economy and permanent-death-focused gameplay. Menaphos will then open in 2027 with the Fool's Gold quest, a new Skilling Dungeon and access to the Soul Altar.

Other planned content includes the continuation of the Fairytale questline, Dungeons of Gielinor and Mining and Smithing changes.

Dragonwilds expands with a new saga and mods

RuneScape: Dragonwilds will receive the Luminance update in December, introducing Elves, the Prayer skill and new customization options. It will also set up the Blood Crystal Saga, which begins with Song of Rebellion in early 2027.

Quarterly updates will add larger features such as Hunter and Slayer, while monthly releases will bring quests, weapons and quality-of-life improvements. Official CurseForge modding support is also planned for 2027 across PC and consoles.

Jagex also confirmed that work has started on a RuneScape animated adaptation. More information on that project is planned for 2027, while the newly announced MMO remains the franchise's biggest long-term project.
