Wing Commander 3 Remaster Plans Revealed After EA Recovers Original Video Tapes

October 12, 2026·3 min read

EA producer Jim Vessella has revealed plans for a Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger remaster after recovering original video recordings from the company's archives. The proposed anniversary edition includes restored cinematic footage, 60 FPS gameplay, controller support, and planned releases on Steam, GOG, and the EA app. No release date has been announced.

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger appears to be getting a remaster more than three decades after its original release. EA producer Jim Vessella revealed plans for an anniversary edition during a presentation at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on October 10.

The project follows Vessella's discovery of roughly 600 original video tapes while digitizing EA's archives. Some of the recovered material includes the original full-motion video (FMV) recordings used in Wing Commander III. The planned remaster would restore those cinematic sequences and introduce modern gameplay improvements.

Original footage could restore Wing Commander 3's cinematic scenes

Released in 1994 by Origin Systems, Wing Commander III combined space combat with live-action cutscenes featuring Hollywood actors. Mark Hamill played protagonist Christopher Blair, alongside Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies.

The filmed sequences were one of the game's biggest selling points. However, the original recordings had to be heavily compressed to work within the storage and hardware limitations of the time. The discovery of the source tapes could now allow those scenes to be presented with considerably better image quality.

Steve Lin, a board member of the Video Game History Foundation, shared a photograph of Vessella's presentation on Bluesky. The slide lists both original master footage and upscaled FMV among the planned features, indicating that the anniversary edition is intended to use the recovered recordings rather than relying entirely on enhanced versions of the compressed videos from the original game.

Although the wider archive discovery involved roughly 600 tapes, the exact number belonging to Wing Commander III has not been established.

The remaster plans include 60 FPS gameplay and controller support

The project was presented under the title Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger – 30th Anniversary Edition. According to the features shown during Vessella's presentation, the remaster is planned to support gameplay at up to 60 frames per second, along with controller support.

Another listed feature is the Community Enhancement Patch, although its exact implementation has not been explained. The presentation also mentions "Kilrathi Saga Integration." This appears to reference Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga, the 1996 Windows collection of the original three games.

However, the wording does not confirm that the anniversary edition will include Wing Commander I, Wing Commander II, or their expansions. EA has not explained what the integration involves.

Vessella previously worked on Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, which also involved restoring classic games and their original video content.

Steam, GOG and the EA app are planned for the new release

The presentation identifies Steam, GOG, and the EA app as planned PC storefronts for the anniversary edition.

The original Wing Commander III is already available on modern PCs through digital storefronts. However, those versions retain much of the original game's presentation and rely on compatibility solutions to run older software.

The anniversary edition aims to go further by restoring its live-action footage and adding updated technical features. EA has not announced when the remaster will be released, how much it will cost, or whether any console versions are planned.
