Max Payne

Max Payne is a third-person action game that follows New York City police detective Max Payne as he investigates the people responsible for the murder of his wife and daughter. Framed for the killing of another officer, Max becomes a fugitive while pursuing leads connected to the designer drug Valkyr and the criminal organizations distributing it. The story unfolds across a snow-covered New York through gunfights, scripted sequences and graphic novel-style cutscenes. Combat centers on pistols, shotguns, rifles and other firearms, with enemies encountered throughout apartments, warehouses, hotels and other urban locations. The game’s defining mechanic is Bullet Time, which slows the action while allowing Max to aim and fire at normal speed. Players can combine it with shoot-dodging to leap through the air while attacking enemies, making it possible to avoid incoming fire and engage several opponents quickly. Painkillers restore health during missions, while ammunition and weapons must be collected from defeated enemies or found in the environment. Levels also include environmental storytelling, television broadcasts and nightmare sequences that reveal more about Max’s past and the conspiracy surrounding Valkyr.
