Alien Breed anniversary collection reveals cancelled PSP and RTS games

The newly released Alien Breed 35th Anniversary Collection includes previously unreleased material from two cancelled projects, revealing plans for both a PSP entry and a real-time strategy game that never reached players.

The material is stored inside the collection's Virtual Museum, which includes development documents, concept art, renders and rare video prototypes from projects left behind during the series' history. The collection launched on September 24 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The PSP project and abandoned RTS are presented as part of an interactive archive rather than playable games. Commodore's official Alien Breed page says the archive includes original design documents, concept artwork, renders and video footage showing ideas that never became commercial releases.

Few details about either cancelled project had been widely available before the collection. The surviving material gives players a closer look at directions Team17 considered for the franchise beyond its familiar top-down shooters and later first-person entries.

The Virtual Museum also contains original physical releases, marketing material, soundtracks and developer interviews. A timeline section explores the history of the series through retrospective videos featuring members of the original development team.

The collection covers the first era of Alien Breed, beginning with the original 1991 game. It also includes Alien Breed: Special Edition 92, Alien Breed II: The Horror Continues, Alien Breed: Tower Assault, Alien Breed 3D and Alien Breed 3D II: The Killing Grounds.

Different Amiga hardware versions are included where appropriate, alongside original demos. Antstream Arcade developed the collection, with Team17 licensing the series and Commodore publishing the release.

The older games have also received optional modern controls, save states, retro screen filters and controller rumble. Players can still switch back to the original control schemes.

The anniversary package goes beyond emulation with two additional modes. Horde Mode is a new solo survival challenge built around increasingly difficult enemy waves.

Rush Mode introduces peer-to-peer online co-op, letting players tackle the series' alien-filled environments together over the internet. Traditional local co-op remains available alongside the newer multiplayer option. These additions sit alongside performance improvements for the older 3D entries, including higher frame rates and modern first-person controls.

Alien Breed 35th Anniversary Collection is available now through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG on PC, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is priced at $24.99 in the United States, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for later in 2026.

No specific Switch release date has been announced. The cancelled PSP and RTS projects remain archival material rather than newly revived games, but their inclusion gives players access to parts of Alien Breed history that never made it to release.
