Metal Gear Solid 2 Gets Its First Full Boss Skip After Nearly 25 Years
A new Tanker route lets Metal Gear Solid 2 speedrunners bypass Olga by manipulating the infrared explosive checkpoint. Runners are still testing whether the setup saves enough time for full runs.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty speedrunners have discovered a way to skip the Olga Gurlukovich boss fight entirely, breaking a sequence that had remained mandatory since the game launched in 2001.
Speedrunner apel demonstrated the new Tanker route, which removes the need to defeat Olga and collect her USP pistol. The discovery is being treated by the speedrunning community as the first known full boss skip in Metal Gear Solid 2, although runners are still working out whether it will ultimately make complete runs faster.
The skip removes the main reason runners had to fight Olga

Olga is the only boss encountered during the Tanker chapter, where Solid Snake normally defeats her before taking the USP she leaves behind. The fight itself can already be completed quickly by experienced runners, but obtaining the weapon has always been necessary for progression later in the chapter.
Snake eventually reaches a corridor blocked by infrared sensors connected to explosives. His starting M9 tranquilizer pistol cannot destroy the controls needed to disable the trap, leaving the USP from Olga as the weapon normally used to clear the route.
That dependency is what kept the boss encounter effectively mandatory. Simply finding a way around Olga was not enough because a runner still needed a method for dealing with the explosives later.
apel's discovery solves the second problem instead. By making the explosive sequence resolve without Snake firing the USP, the route removes the reason to collect the weapon in the first place and allows the Olga encounter to disappear with it.
A guard triggers the explosives while Snake manipulates the checkpoint

The technique uses one of the Tanker's guards to activate the infrared trap. apel knocks the guard unconscious, moves him into position near the sensors and waits for him to wake up, at which point his movement triggers the explosives.
Under normal circumstances, the blast still causes a Game Over. Continuing would restore the area using the previously stored progression state, reactivating the explosives and leaving Snake no better off.
The important part of the skip happens as the explosion is triggered. Snake rolls into a checkpoint at the correct moment, causing the game to store the flag that tracks the explosives after they have already gone off.
When the player continues after the Game Over, that saved state is restored with the trap treated as already triggered. Snake can then move through the corridor without destroying the sensor controls himself. Because the USP is no longer required for that section, there is no longer a progression reason to fight Olga earlier in the Tanker.
Removing a boss does not automatically make the full run faster
Skipping an entire boss sounds like an obvious time save, but the effect on competitive Metal Gear Solid 2 routes is more complicated.
The USP remains useful during later parts of the Tanker, meaning runners who avoid Olga lose access to a weapon used by established strategies elsewhere in the chapter. Sections such as the guard rush and later movement through the ship may therefore need new approaches to compensate.
The skip itself also requires additional setup. A runner must manage the guard, position him correctly and hit the checkpoint timing while the explosives are being triggered, so its value depends on whether those extra steps save more time than the optimized Olga fight and existing USP route.
That leaves the discovery significant even before a new record appears. Metal Gear Solid 2 has been heavily optimized for almost 25 years, yet a boss long considered structurally unavoidable can now be removed from the Tanker completely.
The next step for runners is turning apel's discovery into a refined full-game route and determining whether the first complete boss skip in MGS2 is also fast enough to reshape the leaderboards.
