Resident Evil 2 becomes the series’ best-selling game

July 29, 2026·2 min read
Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake has become the best-selling game in the survival horror series. The 2019 release has now sold 19.75 million copies worldwide, passing the combined sales total of Resident Evil 5.

Resident Evil 2 sold another 1.42 million copies during the three months ending June 30, 2026. Its continued growth also pushed it past Monster Hunter Rise, making it Capcom’s second-best-selling game behind Monster Hunter: World.

Resident Evil 2 had reached 18.3 million sales by the end of March 2026. It added more than one million copies during the following quarter, bringing it close to becoming the first Resident Evil game to pass 20 million.

The remake launched in January 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Capcom later released upgrades and ports for newer platforms, helping the game continue reaching new players several years after launch.

The Remake Rebuilt A 1998 Classic

Resident Evil 2 follows rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield during the fall of Raccoon City. Both characters have separate routes through the police station and other areas affected by the T-virus outbreak.

Capcom rebuilt the original 1998 game with modern third-person combat, redesigned environments and expanded story scenes. The remake kept familiar enemies and puzzles while replacing the fixed camera angles and older control system.

Several other Resident Evil games also sold more than one million copies during Capcom’s latest quarter. Resident Evil 4 added 2.43 million sales, while Resident Evil 7 sold another 1.01 million. Resident Evil 3, Village and Resident Evil 6 also appeared among Capcom’s strongest catalogue titles.

Resident Evil 7 has now reached 18.41 million copies, placing it behind Resident Evil 2 among individually tracked releases. Resident Evil 4 has climbed to 16.04 million, while Village sits at 15.86 million.

Resident Evil Passes 213 Million Sales

The Resident Evil series has now sold 213 million copies worldwide. Strong sales from older Resident Evil games helped Capcom achieve record catalogue sales during the quarter ending June 2026.

Resident Evil Requiem also passed eight million copies after launching in February 2026. Resident Evil 2 remains ahead of every other entry, with the 20-million mark now within reach.
