Resident Evil 4 Gets Fan-Made Co-Op Mod 21 Years After Its Original Release

November 2, 2026·3 min read

A fan-made mod adds online co-op to the original Resident Evil 4 on PC, with compatibility requirements and download restrictions.

The original Resident Evil 4 has received a fan-made multiplayer mod, allowing players to experience Capcom's survival horror classic together more than 21 years after its 2005 debut. The project was created by modder Darksoul309222 and first released on Nexus Mods on October 13, 2026.

The modification adds online co-op to the classic PC version of Resident Evil 4, which never officially supported cooperative campaign play. However, the project is still being developed, with compatibility restrictions and additional improvements planned.

The multiplayer mod allows two players to experience Resident Evil 4 together, changing how they approach encounters with infected villagers, cultists, and other enemies. Instead of facing these threats alone, players can coordinate their movements and fight alongside a partner.

The modification focuses on adding multiplayer rather than changing the original game's mechanics. According to its creator, the current version does not increase enemy numbers or rebalance encounters to account for additional players.

This means players can approach familiar battles with a partner without major changes to the existing combat system.

Although the project is primarily presented as a two-player mod, Darksoul309222 confirmed on October 28 that sessions with four or more players are technically possible. However, performance depends on the host PC, and larger sessions are not the mod's main advertised feature.

The project is also limited to networked multiplayer. Local split-screen is not supported, although the developer has expressed interest in exploring the feature in the future.

The project is designed for the original Resident Evil 4 on PC, rather than Capcom's 2023 remake. Players also need a compatible game version. In an October 23 response on Nexus Mods, Darksoul309222 confirmed that the modification currently works with version 1.1.0.

Compatibility with other community modifications remains a work in progress. The developer is working on support for the popular Resident Evil 4 HD Project, alongside additional gameplay modifications. These include randomizer mods, which could introduce more variety to cooperative play.

Some players have also requested changes to enemy difficulty and encounter balance. The creator has acknowledged that feedback but has not confirmed whether those features will be added.

Latest multiplayer updates are available through the creator's Discord

The mod first appeared on Nexus Mods on October 13, with version 1.0.2 uploaded three days later. That update improved networking performance and increased the time allowed before disconnected players are removed from a session.

However, the latest uploaded build remains quarantined by Nexus Mods' automated safety checks. The platform explains that such restrictions can result from executable files, security scanner detections, or certain archive formats.

Darksoul309222 says the project underwent a manual review, but newer uploads still require additional checks. The creator has directed players to the project's Discord server for updated files and installation assistance.

A setup tutorial is also available through the mod's Nexus Mods page. The project remains unofficial and is not affiliated with Capcom. Players interested in trying it should check the compatibility requirements and download status before installing files.
