01Overview
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag begins in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean and challenged the navies, trade routes, and power structures of European empires. Players control Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer turned pirate who becomes involved in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars. His story includes historical figures such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny. The open world stretches across cities including Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, as well as islands, jungles, fishing villages, and naval forts. Edward captains the Jackdaw, which can freely sail between destinations and battle other ships using broadside cannons, swivel guns, heavy shot, and mortars. Weakened vessels can be boarded for cargo used to upgrade the Jackdaw’s weapons, armor, and storage. On land, Edward climbs buildings, blends into crowds, infiltrates restricted areas, and fights with Hidden Blades, swords, and flintlock pistols. Optional activities include exploring underwater shipwrecks, following treasure maps, capturing forts, hunting animals, completing assassination contracts, and collecting sea shanties for the crew. Captured ships can also be assigned to Kenway’s Fleet for trading missions. A separate competitive multiplayer mode centers on identifying, pursuing, and assassinating human-controlled targets while avoiding their own hunters.
