Jagex can't reignite RuneScape by splitting it

October 19, 2026·7 min read

RuneScape Reignited promised a fresh economy and cleaner starting point, but it also separated new and veteran players. Jagex can still improve the return to RuneScape without dividing its community.

Jagex canceled RuneScape Reignited on October 15, just twelve days after unveiling it at RuneFest. The idea was to give new and returning players a cleaner starting point, with their own economy and HiScores instead of entering a game where veteran accounts have had decades to build wealth.

Doing that would also have kept Reignited characters apart from the wider community. Trading with veteran players was restricted, some group activities were separate, and Jagex initially planned to charge another membership. Within days, the studio was apologizing and revising parts of the plan before dropping Reignited altogether.

Reignited is not happening, but Jagex is still launching the Adventure Guide, Remastered Journey and other improvements for new and returning players on December 2. Those changes can help new and returning players find their footing without separating them from the wider RuneScape community.

Starting over together was the appeal

Coming back to RuneScape after years away can be disorienting. Your old gear may no longer be particularly valuable, Grand Exchange prices can look completely different and friends may be fighting bosses or using training methods that did not exist when you stopped playing. If you are a brand-new player you might have even more catching up to do.

Reignited would have started everyone again with a new character. Old banks, equipment and wealth would stay in the main game, while the new economy had to build itself from scratch. Logs, ore, food and basic equipment would need to be gathered and traded again, and a new set of HiScores would give players fresh ranks to chase.

If you already have an account you could join Reignited as well. You would start with the same empty bank as everyone else, although years of RuneScape knowledge would still help them progress faster. Someone who already knows efficient quest orders, training spots and money-making methods is not really starting from zero in the same way as a newcomer.

The clean economy therefore depended on keeping old wealth out. Jagex planned to restrict trading and some group activities between Reignited and standard characters, which protected the reset but also separated people who might otherwise have played together.

Shared worlds still separated trade and bossing

Reignited's new economy could only stay separate if veteran accounts were unable to move their gold and equipment into it. Jagex therefore planned two character types that could share parts of RuneScape without sharing everything.

Reignited characters could enter Veteran worlds, join the same clans and chat with existing players. They would still use their own Grand Exchange, however, and direct trading between the two character types was blocked. Bossing had similar restrictions, with Veteran and Reignited characters unable to share the same instances.

A returning player could therefore join an old clan and talk to the same friends, but not trade with them or necessarily join them for a boss. Anyone who wanted both a Veteran character and a Reignited character would initially need a second membership as well.

Jagex began changing course almost immediately. On October 6, the studio apologized for making existing players feel pushed aside. Three days later, it proposed allowing one account to switch between Veteran and Reignited characters under the same membership, with cosmetics carried across both.

Exclusive Reignited worlds were also being reconsidered, and Jagex discussed easing some group restrictions after the early economy and world-first races had settled.

None of those changes had been finalized before Reignited was canceled. But within a week of the reveal, Jagex was already looking for ways to let the two sides play together more freely without opening the fresh economy to veteran wealth.

Jagex remembered the cost of ignoring feedback

When Jagex canceled Reignited, associate creative director Mod Ryan reached back to one of the most painful moments in RuneScape history. The last time the studio pushed ahead despite heavy player opposition, he said, combat changed permanently and Jagex spent more than a decade trying to recover. He was talking about the Evolution of Combat overhaul from 2012.

Reignited was nowhere near as drastic. It would have added an optional character type rather than changing how every account played. Ryan's comparison was about the response from the community. Jagex had announced Reignited as a way to bring new and returning players back, but many existing players saw another version of RuneScape being built beside the one they were already paying for.

By October 15, Jagex had decided not to keep pushing. Reignited was canceled less than two weeks after its RuneFest reveal, despite several revisions already being discussed.

This removes some of the backlash, but it does not solve the problem Jagex was trying to address. Ryan says RuneScape still has hundreds of thousands of members and can remain sustainable for years, while also acknowledging a gradual decline.

The game still needs new players and returning veterans. Jagex now has to find a way to bring them in without building a separate version of RuneScape around them.

December's improvements can welcome players into the existing game

Canceling Reignited does not mean Jagex is dropping the work aimed at new and returning players. The first part of the Remastered Journey and the Adventure Guide are still planned for December 2, this time inside the existing game rather than behind a separate character type.

Several familiar areas are being refreshed, including Tutorial Island, Seers' Village, Camelot and Elvarg's lair. Early quest bosses from Demon Slayer, Vampyre Slayer and Dragon Slayer are also being reworked with clearer mechanics and health bars, while interface changes and skill guidance should make the first hours easier to follow.

The Adventure Guide is aimed at players who need direction after those opening quests. It can recommend activities all the way into endgame, so someone returning to an old account does not have to abandon years of progress just to work out what to do next.

Jagex is also keeping the ten-day membership trial from December 2 to 12 for new characters and returning accounts that have not had active membership since June 2. Old School RuneScape is excluded from the offer.

There is plenty waiting beyond that return period. The 2027 roadmap includes Hoard of Dragons and its Dragon Slayer sequel, City of Gnomes, Secrets of Karamja and a new endgame raid, alongside an Agility rework.

Jagex is also planning changes to grouping and a clan finder. For a returning player, finding an old friend or a new group may do more to bring RuneScape back to life than starting over in a separate economy ever could.

Separate games can offer something a second economy cannot

Old School RuneScape has become its own branch of the series, with different combat, quests and development priorities. RuneScape: Dragonwilds goes further, using survival, crafting and co-op building to offer something completely different from starting another RuneScape character with an empty bank.

Jagex has described Dragonwilds as a third pillar, while RS4 is still years away. Reignited sat much closer to the existing MMO, with the same world and skills but a separate economy and multiplayer restrictions.

Its cancellation does not end Jagex's push to attract new and returning players. It shifts that work back into RuneScape itself. That is probably the better direction. Jagex still needs to make a 25-year-old MMO easier to enter, but it does not need a second economy to do it.
