78-Year-Old Fortnite Streamer Cath Bowie Sets Guinness World Record

Scottish Fortnite streamer Cath Bowie has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch.

Known online as grumpygran1948, Bowie turned 78 on September 1 and has built a Twitch audience of more than 24,000 followers. Bowie is also featured in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027.

Bowie discovered Fortnite in 2017 after seeing her grandson playing it. She had tried other games before but said none had held her interest in the same way.

She created her own Fortnite account and began streaming in 2018. Her grandson initially questioned whether people would want to watch his grandmother play, which pushed Bowie to prove otherwise. Her channel has since grown beyond 24,000 followers.

Her streaming career had already reached several milestones before the Guinness recognition. Bowie became a Twitch Partner and in 2024 was chosen as the UK face of IKEA's BRÄNNBOLL gaming collection.

The grumpygran1948 name came from her granddaughter, although Bowie says the "grumpy" part was intended as a joke.

Nearly nine years after she first picked up Fortnite, Bowie continues to stream the game regularly and can spend hours playing at a time. She describes herself as a "Fortniter" rather than a gamer and says other games have not given her the same enjoyment.

Winning is not Bowie's main focus during streams. She sets herself goals for individual matches and uses the sessions to challenge herself while talking with the community that has formed around her channel.

That community has become an important part of why she continues. Bowie credited her family for supporting her throughout her time playing and streaming, along with the friends she has met through Fortnite.

Appearing in a Guinness World Records gaming book had previously been on Bowie's wish list, but she did not expect it to happen. She said becoming a record holder "means a great deal" after years of playing and growing her stream.

Her recognition comes as part of the Gamer's Edition 2027, which features record holders from different parts of gaming. Bowie has no plans to stop as she gets older, telling prospective older players not to let age prevent them from trying games themselves.
