Fortnite's Nikki Skin Sparks Debate Among Obsession Fans Over Horror Film's Themes

October 21, 2026·3 min read

Fortnite's Nikki Freeman skin has divided Obsession fans, with some criticizing how the crossover handles the horror film's disturbing themes and others defending its inclusion.

Epic Games' latest Fortnite crossover has sparked debate among horror fans after Nikki Freeman from the 2026 film Obsession was revealed as a playable skin. Some viewers have criticized the decision to turn a character whose story involves abuse and loss of control into a purchasable cosmetic, with at least one social media post calling for a boycott.

Epic revealed the outfit on October 20, 2026, through a promotional video featuring actress Inde Navarrette, who plays Nikki in the film. The skin is scheduled to arrive in the Item Shop on October 21 as part of Fortnitemares 2026. While some fans have welcomed the collaboration, others believe it overlooks important themes from the movie.

The crossover brings Nikki Freeman into Fortnite with an outfit inspired by her appearance in Curry Barker's supernatural horror film. The character features her recognizable red top, dark shorts and unsettling facial expressions.

The cosmetic set also includes a One Wish Willow back bling and a broken bottle pickaxe, both referencing important objects from Obsession. Another addition is the "No No No" emote, which recreates part of Nikki's confrontation with Bear. Rather than using dialogue from the film, the animation has Nikki display signs containing words from the scene.

The emote has attracted particular attention because the original scene carries a disturbing meaning within the film's story.

Navarrette participated in the collaboration's promotional video, recreating the supernatural wish that drives the events of Obsession. The crossover forms part of Fortnitemares 2026, which also features characters from several other horror franchises.

Horror fans criticize the use of Nikki's traumatic storyline

The criticism largely comes from the role Nikki plays in Obsession. In the film, Bear uses a supernatural object called the One Wish Willow to make her fall in love with him. The wish has horrifying consequences, trapping the real Nikki inside her own mind while a malicious entity takes control of her body.

Nikki is forced to witness events without being able to stop them. Bear also exploits her situation, making coercion, sexual abuse and the loss of personal autonomy central themes of the story.

Some viewers argue that these details make her inclusion in Fortnite uncomfortable. They believe presenting Nikki as a cosmetic character, complete with an emote based on her distress, risks turning the film's darker themes into entertainment.

Others have criticized how Nikki has become a popular internet meme, arguing that her expressions and memorable scenes are increasingly being separated from their original context. The discussion has spread across X and Reddit, where some horror fans have questioned whether the crossover respects the character's story.

Boycott calls face pushback from other Fortnite players

At least one social media post called for a boycott of Fortnite over Nikki's inclusion. However, there is no clear evidence of an organized campaign or widespread participation. Much of the criticism comes from individual social media users discussing the crossover and its treatment of the character.

Other players have defended Epic's decision, arguing that adding Nikki to Fortnite does not necessarily diminish the film's message. Some fans believe the outfit offers another way to celebrate a popular horror character. They have also argued that Nikki should not be defined solely by the traumatic experiences she endures in Obsession.
