New Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Game Reportedly Leaked

A new Cyberpunk game may have surfaced, but it is not the next open-world RPG. A former WayForward developer's portfolio reportedly revealed Project Gemini, an unannounced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners project built as a 2.5D beat 'em up with online multiplayer in mind. The idea sounds much smaller than Cyberpunk 2077, but it also fits the anime's speed and street-level action.

The listing described work carried out during 2025 and 2026, which suggests the project was still being tested rather than prepared for release. CD Projekt Red and WayForward have not announced it, and no gameplay footage or finished screenshots have appeared. For now, this looks like a real development experiment whose current status remains unclear.

The leaked portfolio described Gemini as a rollback-driven brawler with online transport support. That wording points to multiplayer being part of the design from the beginning, which is important for a fast action game where several players may be attacking, moving, and launching enemies across the screen at once. It also suggests the team was testing the difficult technical parts early.

Rollback technology is usually used to keep online matches responsive when connections are not perfect. In a side-scrolling beat 'em up, that could help co-op fights feel smoother when the screen fills with enemies, weapons, and effects. The files do not reveal the player count, platforms, mission structure, or whether local co-op was also planned.

An internal logo reportedly placed the Edgerunners name beside the Gemini codename, giving the project a clear link to the anime. The research and development label is still important because studios often build early versions to test combat, networking, and art direction before deciding whether a full game is worth funding. Some prototypes grow into releases, while others disappear without an announcement.

WayForward's work on River City Girls makes the reported partnership easy to understand. Those games mix side-scrolling fights, co-op play, shops, upgrades, and city streets, giving the studio useful experience for a smaller Cyberpunk release focused on direct action rather than a huge open world. Its colourful character animation could also match Edgerunners better than a realistic style.

Night City already has the gangs, cyberware, guns, melee weapons, and crowded districts needed for that kind of game. A brawler could move through short missions, street fights, boss battles, and story scenes without trying to recreate Cyberpunk 2077. The bright colours, sudden violence, and fast movement of Edgerunners would suit that structure naturally.

The portfolio does not say whether Gemini followed David's crew, introduced a new group, or connected with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Without artwork, a cast list, or a story description, even the basic shape of the campaign remains open.

WayForward also had an unannounced licensed Unreal Engine 5 project that reportedly stopped development in September 2025 after funding problems. The timing overlaps with Gemini, but there is no proof they were the same game. Treating the leaked brawler as cancelled would go further than the available information supports.

CD Projekt Red is already working on the next main Cyberpunk RPG under the codename Project Orion, while Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is being developed as a separate anime project. Gemini would sit beside those larger releases as a smaller spin-off, giving the franchise another way to explore Night City without waiting for a full open-world sequel.

A beat 'em up could fill the long gap before the next RPG, and WayForward has the background to make the idea work. Before players get too attached, CD Projekt Red needs to confirm whether Gemini was only a prototype, a paused project, or something that still has a path toward release.
