Deadlock Smashes Its Steam Player Record With More Than 228,000 Concurrent Players

October 1, 2026·3 min read

Deadlock has reached a new all-time Steam peak of 228,086 concurrent players following Valve's City Never Sleeps update, despite remaining unfinished and invite-only.

Deadlock has broken its Steam player record following the launch of Valve's City Never Sleeps update, with Steam recording an all-time peak of 228,086 concurrent players on September 29.

The new high surpasses the previous Steam record of 171,490 players from September 2024 by more than 56,000. It also comes while Deadlock remains unfinished and invite-only, with new players still needing access through an existing playtester rather than a normal public release.

Valve released City Never Sleeps on September 29 as a major Deadlock update, combining a major overhaul of the game's New York-inspired map with new systems, enemies and quality-of-life improvements.

The map and neutral camps have received extensive visual and gameplay changes, with new districts, updated creatures and additional points of interest spread throughout the city. Valve also introduced the Broker, a temporary merchant who lets players exchange high-tier items for corrupted versions that provide stronger bonuses alongside randomized drawbacks.

Several underlying systems were updated at the same time. City Never Sleeps includes improvements to anti-cheat, network prediction, rendering and audio performance, while Deadlock has also moved onto a newer version of Source 2.

HUD readability, shop navigation, communication tools and accessibility options were expanded as well. Rather than centering the update around one feature, Valve says the team has spent much of the year developing several parts of the game in parallel. The new Steam record arrived on the same day as City Never Sleeps, surpassing a peak that had stood since September 2024.

Six new heroes will be released through player voting

City Never Sleeps also introduces six new heroes, although Valve is staggering their arrival instead of making the full group playable immediately.

Two heroes will release each week on Tuesdays and Fridays beginning October 2, with players voting on which characters arrive first. Voting takes place in the pregame lobby, while first wins of the day and other systems can increase a player's influence over the release order.

The schedule spreads the six hero releases across three weeks, with voting determining which characters become playable first. Valve has paired the hero rollout with changes to combat readability and team communication, including improved health bars, more detailed indicators and a heavily expanded ping system.

Valve still considers Deadlock an unfinished game

Despite the new player record, Valve continues to describe Deadlock as an unfinished game with substantial work remaining on its core systems.

The development team says there is still substantial work it wants to complete on the core game before shifting more heavily toward later-stage polish. Progression systems and hero and hideout customization remain in development, while larger item redesigns and alternate modes are also being tested without guarantees that every experiment will make it into the final game.

Valve has also identified Midboss, Guardians and Walkers as areas that still need further work. Older hero remodels are planned too, but the studio considers them a later priority than systems that can still change significantly based on player feedback.

That leaves Deadlock in an unusual position. It has now reached more than 228,000 concurrent Steam players without a normal public release, while Valve is still treating the current build as an active development environment rather than a finished live game.
