Sony reveals God of War Laufey, and Kratos is not the lead this time

June 15, 2026·3 min read
Sony just gave God of War fans the kind of reveal that makes the whole series feel new again. God of War Laufey is a new PS5 game from Santa Monica Studio, but the surprise is not just that the franchise is returning. This time, players are taking control of Faye.

That is a bold move for a series so closely tied to Kratos. Faye has shaped the Norse saga from the background for years, but God of War Laufey finally puts Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother at the center of the story. She is no longer only a memory, a mystery, or the person everyone else is trying to understand.

Faye finally gets her own story

The new game begins after Faye’s funeral, with death turning out to be the start of something much bigger. She wakes in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, and discovers that the plans she left behind to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger.

That gives the story a strong emotional pull without needing Kratos to be the main character. Faye is fighting for the people she loves, but she is also stepping into a world that can finally show who she was outside the stories other characters told about her.

For fans who wanted to know more about her past, this is the cleanest way Santa Monica could answer that curiosity without simply making another flashback-heavy Kratos game.

The Everywhen opens the door to stranger mythology

The Everywhen may be the most interesting part of the reveal. Santa Monica describes it as the afterlife of the gods, a place where powerful beings from different mythologies fight for control.

That immediately gives God of War Laufey a different kind of playground. The Norse saga was already full of prophecy, family damage, and cosmic consequences, but this setting lets the series look beyond one pantheon without forcing Kratos into another land right away.

If dead gods can still matter, then the series has a new way to revisit old wounds, old enemies, and myths that Kratos thought were finished.

Faye moves differently from Kratos

The gameplay reveal makes it clear that Faye is not just Kratos with a different weapon. Her combat is faster, more mobile, and more acrobatic, with aerial attacks, quick movement, and a style that feels closer to the older Greek-era speed while keeping the weight of the modern games.

A new lead only works if the game feels different in the player’s hands. Faye gives Santa Monica a way to refresh combat without throwing away what made the 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarök work.

The result looks like a bridge between two eras of the series: more agile than Kratos, but still violent, heavy, and personal.

Sony has not given it a release date yet

God of War Laufey has been revealed for PS5, but Sony has not locked in a release date. That leaves the biggest questions for later, including how long the game is, how directly it connects to Kratos and Atreus, and whether this is the start of a new direction for the franchise.

Santa Monica is not simply making another Kratos sequel. It is taking one of the most important unseen figures in the modern series and letting her fight her way through a world built from dead gods and unfinished promises.

For a franchise that could have played it safe, Faye leading the next God of War game is exactly the kind of risk that makes the future more interesting.
