Nintendo officially announces Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2

Nintendo has officially announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2. The game is scheduled to launch sometime in 2026 and will be exclusive to Nintendo’s current console.

The remake was revealed during Nintendo’s June Direct after months of leaks surrounding the project. Nintendo has not announced an exact release date, price, or pre-order details yet.

Nintendo ended its Direct with a short cinematic teaser rather than a full gameplay demonstration. The footage opens with a tapestry, then shows young Link sleeping in Kokiri Forest, recreating the beginning of the original adventure.

The remake uses a more detailed visual style than the Nintendo 64 original and its Nintendo 3DS version. Nintendo’s current description promises updated designs and new visuals while keeping the gameplay that defined Ocarina of Time.

The company has not yet explained how much of the original game will be changed. There are no confirmed details about its controls, camera, dungeons, combat changes, additional content, or whether any systems from the 3DS remake will return.

Nintendo has confirmed that it remains a single-player adventure. Its official Switch 2 page currently lists only a 2026 release window, with more information expected before launch.

The original Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in 1998 and became the first fully 3D game in the Zelda series. It introduced systems such as Z-targeting and a structure that influenced later 3D Zelda releases.

Nintendo previously revisited the game with Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS in 2011. That version improved the graphics and added new features, while the Switch 2 game is being treated as a full remake rather than a simple port.

A recent Nintendo store listing also shows an Everyone 10+ ESRB rating with animated blood and fantasy violence. The rating appears while the game continues to maintain its 2026 launch window.

Nintendo has not given a specific release date yet. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is currently confirmed only for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo will share more details before it launches later this year.
