Overwatch Reworks Sombra Into Support and Roadhog

October 7, 2026·3 min read

Blizzard's latest Overwatch update moves Sombra from Damage to Support, removes Hack as a standard ability, and gives Roadhog a new projectile-absorbing defensive tool.

Blizzard has overhauled Sombra and Roadhog in Overwatch's October 6 update, changing how both heroes contribute to their teams rather than simply adjusting their existing numbers. Sombra has moved from Damage to Support and lost Hack as a standard ability, while Roadhog now has a defensive tool that absorbs enemy projectiles and converts them into an attack.

The reworks launched with Reign of Talon Season 5: A Grim Doctrine. Blizzard says Sombra's old role conflicted with her identity as a disruptive hero, while Roadhog's changes are intended to reduce the frustration around Chain Hook kills and give him more ways to protect his team.

Sombra is now a Support Tactician, with Blizzard rebuilding her kit around healing allies and disrupting enemies without regularly locking them out of their abilities. Hack has been removed from her standard abilities, one of the most significant changes to a hero that has been defined by the mechanic for years.

Blizzard says the old version could leave opponents unexpectedly unable to use their abilities, which many players found frustrating and difficult to respond to. Its replacement is Weaken, a new debuff that reduces an affected enemy's damage and healing output by half without disabling the rest of their kit.

Sombra's new Hotfix ability targets an ally for healing after a brief cast. It can also be used while she is Invisible without immediately breaking stealth, allowing her to support teammates without completely giving up the positioning tools associated with her previous versions.

Cyberspace gives her a second support option by creating an area that heals allies while applying Weaken to enemies inside it. Blizzard's stated goal is to retain Sombra's battlefield control and information-focused identity while making those strengths fit the Support role more naturally.

Roadhog remains a Tank, but Blizzard has moved part of his power away from the familiar Chain Hook follow-up and into a new defensive ability called Trash Compactor.

Trash Compactor absorbs incoming enemy projectiles before Roadhog launches an explosive shot back at his opponents. The returning projectile becomes stronger depending on how much incoming damage was absorbed, giving Roadhog a way to protect space and respond to ranged pressure rather than relying almost entirely on his own survivability and Hook.

His Scrap Gun has also been redesigned to fire two bursts per volley, with a stronger central projectile included in each burst. Blizzard says the weapon and Chain Hook changes are intended to preserve Hook's value as a displacement tool while making the combination less immediately lethal to most heroes.

That is a notable shift for a hero whose identity has long revolved around pulling an opponent into close range and quickly finishing them. The new version gives Roadhog another way to contribute when Hook is unavailable or when his team needs protection from incoming projectiles.

The Sombra and Roadhog reworks are live now as part of the October 6 Season 5 update across Overwatch's standard modes. Blizzard has described Sombra's role swap as one of the largest changes it has made to an existing hero, while Roadhog's redesign targets one of the longest-running complaints surrounding his Hook combo.
