Shadow the Hedgehog was meant to stay dead after Sonic Adventure 2
September 28, 2026·3 min read
Sonic Team originally intended Shadow’s Sonic Adventure 2 ending to be permanent before strong fan demand led to his return in Sonic Heroes.
Shadow the Hedgehog was originally supposed to disappear from the Sonic series after Sonic Adventure 2, according to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka. Sega changed those plans after the character became far more popular than the development team expected.
Speaking during Tokyo Game Show 2026 as part of Sonic's 35th anniversary celebrations, Iizuka explained that Shadow's apparent death at the end of the 2001 game was originally intended to end his story. Strong demand from players instead led Sonic Team to bring him back in Sonic Heroes.
Shadow's Sonic Adventure 2 ending was supposed to be permanent

Shadow made his debut in Sonic Adventure 2 as a rival to Sonic. Much of his story revolves around Maria Robotnik and the promise he made to her before her death.
By the end of the game, Shadow helps Sonic stop the Space Colony ARK from crashing into Earth. He then falls toward the planet after the final battle, apparently sacrificing himself in the process. Iizuka said Sonic Team originally planned to leave the character's story there. Iizuka told:
"We were originally intending to just kind of 'die the character out' (kill him off)."

Fan demand brought Shadow back in Sonic Heroes

Shadow returned in Sonic Heroes, released a few years after Sonic Adventure 2. His survival became part of a new storyline involving his missing memories and questions about whether the character was really the original Shadow.
Iizuka previously explained that Sonic Team received large numbers of letters asking to see more of the character. Social media was not available to provide instant feedback at the time, so those letters became one of the clearest signs that Shadow had connected with players.
Interest also came from inside Sega, where staff wanted the character to appear again. Sonic Team eventually found a way to bring him back while leaving his past uncertain enough to become part of the story. Shadow later received his own game, Shadow the Hedgehog, in 2005, which explored more of his origins and connection to Black Doom.
Iizuka wants Shadow to get more attention
Twenty-five years after his debut, Shadow is now one of the most recognizable characters in the Sonic series. Iizuka said his popularity has risen further following the third Sonic movie and now considers him to be at a similar level to Sonic himself.
Shadow is also Iizuka's personal favorite character. He said he wants to create more opportunities for Shadow and place greater focus on him in future projects.
Sega has already given the character a larger role in recent years. Sonic X Shadow Generations included a new Shadow-focused campaign alongside the remastered Sonic Generations, while the character also played a central role in the third live-action Sonic film.
Had Sonic Team followed its original plan for Sonic Adventure 2, those appearances would never have happened. Shadow's return in Sonic Heroes instead turned what was designed as a one-game character into one of the series' longest-running stars.
