Final Fantasy XV's Noctis Returns in Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22

Noctis Lucis Caelum is returning to Final Fantasy on October 22 as one of the legacy heroes appearing in Final Fantasy Resonance.

The Final Fantasy XV protagonist will appear through the game's Vision system, which allows party members to equip the powers and abilities of characters from across the series. Noctis therefore returns as an equippable Vision rather than joining the main cast as a conventional party member.

Visions are crystallized versions of characters that can be equipped by members of the main party. Players can unlock abilities from a Vision by using it in battle, and learned abilities can continue to be equipped even after switching to another Vision. That allows abilities from different characters to be combined within the game's cost limit.

Legacy heroes are obtained through Vision Crystal Sanctums found around the world. Once equipped, they give the active character access to abilities inspired by that hero while leaving Resonance's own cast at the center of the adventure.

For Noctis, that gives Final Fantasy XV a direct place in the new game's wider celebration of the numbered series without bringing his original story into Resonance as a full crossover campaign.

Equipping a Vision affects more than a character's regular abilities. During battle, staggering every enemy in a single turn triggers a Sweeping Stagger, allowing players to use a Vision-specific special move called a Resonance at the end of the Extra Phase. These attacks can deal heavy damage or provide other effects depending on the Vision being used.

That gives returning heroes a more substantial combat role than a visual cameo. Square Enix has confirmed other legacy characters including Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light, while Sephiroth will appear separately as a character players can find and challenge.

Final Fantasy Resonance is the first HD-2D entry in the series and is based on the opening story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Square Enix says the project has been extensively rebuilt as a full RPG rather than being a direct port of the mobile game.

Its story follows Rain and Lasswell through a crystal-focused adventure with turn-based combat, while Visions provide the main connection to previous numbered games.

A free demo containing the entire first chapter is already available, and progress can transfer into the full game.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 22, with the Steam version scheduled for October 23 in Japan.
