Former GTA 6 developer explains challenges of a Switch 2 version

September 25, 2026·3 min read

A former GTA 6 developer has discussed the technical and commercial challenges Rockstar could face with a native Switch 2 version.

A former Grand Theft Auto 6 developer has weighed in on the possibility of Rockstar bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2, arguing that a native port may require compromises that make the project difficult to justify.

Jérémy Hartvick, who worked as an open-world designer at Rockstar North and contributed to GTA 6 until 2020, discussed the idea during a members-only interview with YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz. His comments reflect his own assessment rather than Rockstar's current plans.

Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 for Switch 2. The game is currently scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.

Hartvick described the possibility of a Switch 2 version as "complicated," pointing to both hardware limitations and the amount of additional development work a native port could require. He argued that Rockstar would have to make concessions to get the game running on Nintendo's hardware, potentially leaving Switch 2 players with an experience below the standard offered on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Hartvick said:

"I don't believe it even makes sense, because I'm not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch"

His argument is partly commercial. He suggested that dedicated GTA players may already be willing to buy hardware capable of running the game, reducing the incentive for Rockstar to invest heavily in another version that would need substantial technical changes. Hartvick did not say a Switch 2 port was impossible.

Streaming could avoid some hardware limitations

Hartvick also raised cloud streaming as one possible way to bring GTA 6 to less powerful devices without requiring the game to run entirely on local hardware. He said modern streaming technology could theoretically allow a game such as GTA 6 to run through remote servers and reach devices ranging from Switch 2 to smartphones.

That possibility remains hypothetical. Rockstar has not announced a cloud version of GTA 6, and Nintendo has not revealed any partnership involving the game.

A streamed release would also be different from a native Switch 2 port, since performance would depend heavily on internet connectivity and the infrastructure behind the service.

Rockstar has only announced two launch platforms

Rockstar's current platform information continues to list only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the November 19 launch. Switch 2 and PC versions have not been announced.

Reports and speculation about a Nintendo version have circulated since Switch 2 launched, but none has resulted in an official confirmation from Rockstar or publisher Take-Two Interactive. Hartvick's comments therefore do not confirm or rule out a future port. They instead provide a former developer's view of the technical and business compromises Rockstar would have to consider before bringing GTA 6 to Nintendo's hardware.
