Riot parental controls limit League and Valorant options

Riot Games has added optional parental controls for League of Legends, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics on PC in the United States. The new system lets parents or guardians limit social features, restrict access to specific Riot games and manage parts of a child’s account experience.

The feature is designed for younger players, but its rollout has drawn attention because it can directly limit what players are allowed to do inside Riot’s biggest games. Chat, friend requests and even access to certain titles can now be controlled through a parent portal.

Parents can restrict chat and friend requests

The new tools let parents turn off text and voice chat or limit communication to friends only. They can also block friend requests, view a child’s friends list and manage who the account can interact with.

That makes the feature especially relevant for Valorant, where voice chat plays a major role in team coordination. League of Legends relies less on voice chat in normal matchmaking, but text chat and social features remain central to parties, friends lists and post-game interaction.

Game access can also be limited

The parental controls go beyond chat settings. Parents can restrict access to specific Riot games, which means a child account may be allowed to play one Riot title while being blocked from another. That is the part most directly tied to player choice. A young player could have League of Legends enabled while Valorant is restricted, or vice versa. Teamfight Tactics is also included in the PC rollout, giving parents control across Riot’s current main PC lineup.

Riot is starting with PC in the US

The rollout currently applies to League of Legends, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics on PC in the United States. Riot has not launched the same parental control setup globally yet, and mobile versions are not part of this first release.

Parents can connect an email to the child’s Riot account and then use the parent portal to manage settings. The system is separate from normal in-game options, so players may need account-level changes rather than a simple toggle inside the game client.

The rollout caused some confusion

Some players reported seeing parental control warnings or chat restrictions even when they said they were adults. Those complaints appeared across Riot community spaces after the feature went live, with players saying chat or social features were disabled unexpectedly.

The issue appears linked to the early rollout, not a planned restriction for adult accounts. Still, it shows why the launch is sensitive. League and Valorant are competitive games where losing access to communication tools can affect matches, parties and ranked play.

The new parental controls add another account-level safety layer to Riot’s PC games. They sit outside normal match settings and are managed through a parent portal rather than through the League, Valorant or TFT clients.

That means the controls can follow the Riot account across supported games. If parental controls are active, communication, friend access and game availability can be limited before a player even enters a match.
