Digimon is getting a new game on August 18, taking the series in a new direction. AFK Journey is teaming up with Digimon Adventure for a limited-time crossover in Esperia. Taichi and Agumon will join Yamato and Gabumon as playable hero pairs.
Agumon and Gabumon can Digivolve during battles, turning into WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon when they use their abilities. Players will also spend time with both Digimon away from fights through a new bonding system. Training, feeding, playing, and resting all feed into progression during the crossover.

Taichi and Agumon are treated as one playable hero, while Yamato and Gabumon make up the second pair. Their Digimon are part of the combat kits rather than decorative companions standing beside the human characters. This should make the crossover feel more like Digimon Adventure during battles.
WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon are an easy nostalgia win, but they also give the crossover something recognizable to build its combat around. Early player discussions have focused on the Digivolution animations and how the two pairs will perform with their full abilities. For older fans, those transformations may be the best part of the crossover.
A new story brings all four characters to Esperia through a dimensional rift. Taichi, Yamato, Agumon, and Gabumon encounter the Hypofiends while searching for a way back to the Digital World. Completing the crossover story and missions gives you event currency and upgrade materials.

Agumon and Gabumon also have their own bonding activities between battles. Players can train them, feed them, play together, or let them rest, with higher bond levels unlocking bonuses for the event. It's a simple idea, but it fits Digimon much better than just adding two guest characters to the game.
The story missions lead to a special crossover shop where you can spend event currency on upgrade materials, Digimon Invite Letters, and other rewards. The event also includes limited outfits inspired by Taichi and Yamato. There are also themed headgear and a special frame for players who want to show off the crossover outside of battles.
AFK Journey has become increasingly comfortable with anime crossovers. Its Frieren: Beyond Journey's End collaboration earlier this year mixed guest heroes with login rewards and limited events. Digimon Adventure follows the same basic idea. However, the bonding system and in-battle Digivolution make the crossover feel more connected to the original series.
Both limited hero pairs can be claimed by logging in during the crossover, so players will not have to rely entirely on summons just to use the headline characters. Daily rewards will also give players extra event items. Players will have to wait for the event to see how much it costs to fully upgrade both pairs.
Some players are deciding if the Digimon characters are worth adding to their teams. Others are happy to collect them just for the crossover. For many players, liking the guest series is important just as much as how strong the characters are.
AFK Journey x Digimon Adventure begins on August 18. The first few days should show how useful Taichi, Yamato, Agumon, and Gabumon are once the excitement settles down. They will also show if the bonding system makes the event feel like a true Digimon crossover.
