Baldur's Gate 3 publishing director defends The Blood of Dawnwalker's time system

October 1, 2026·3 min read

Michael Douse says Dawnwalker's limited schedule strengthens its RPG choices, while Rebel Wolves treats time as a resource rather than a countdown.

Larian Studios publishing director Michael Douse has defended The Blood of Dawnwalker's time system, saying he is surprised by the criticism surrounding the mechanic. Douse praised how developer Rebel Wolves ties the limited schedule to the RPG's story and player choices.

Douse, who worked on Baldur's Gate 3, shared his thoughts after reaching the later stages of The Blood of Dawnwalker. He described the system as a "perfectly interwoven narrative tool" that encourages players to approach the game differently from more traditional open-world RPGs.

Dawnwalker's 30-day limit has divided players

The Blood of Dawnwalker gives protagonist Coen 30 days and 30 nights to save his family. However, time does not pass automatically while players explore the open world.

Instead, specific quest actions and important decisions consume clearly marked portions of time. Players can freely travel around Vale Sangora, but they cannot complete every meaningful activity before the deadline.

That structure has drawn criticism from players worried about missing quests or feeling pressured to manage every decision. Community mods have already appeared that alter the time system for players who prefer a more traditional approach.

Douse says the mechanic fits the game's design

Douse argued that the time system helps The Blood of Dawnwalker establish its own identity rather than copying the structure of games such as The Witcher. The limited schedule forces players to decide which characters, quests and problems deserve their attention.

Rebel Wolves designed the mechanic around that idea. Senior quest designer Patryk Fijalkowski previously explained that the studio wanted players to think about time as a resource, while director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said the system was intended to create urgency without becoming the game's main challenge.

The developers also reduced some of that pressure before release. Tomaszkiewicz said an earlier version was more demanding, but the team rebalanced it so players would not spend too much time worrying about the clock.

Running out of time does not end the game

Failing to rescue Coen's family before the deadline does not automatically end a playthrough. Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz has said the story continues, with missed opportunities and earlier choices affecting what happens next.

The system therefore works more like a consequence mechanic than a strict countdown. Players are warned when an action will consume time, allowing them to decide whether a quest or objective is worth using part of their remaining schedule.

Rebel Wolves has also said future games would not necessarily repeat the same 30-day structure. The studio would only use a similar mechanic again if it suited the story.

Douse wants Rebel Wolves to build on the setting

Douse also praised the game's gothic world and its mix of humans, vampires and low-fantasy conflicts. He said he would like to see Rebel Wolves push those elements further if the game develops into a larger series.

The Blood of Dawnwalker launched on September 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Its time system remains one of its most debated features, but Douse sees it as a core part of the game's design rather than an unnecessary restriction.
