EA Sports FC 27 Lite Launches as Free Limited Preview on PC, PlayStation and Xbox

EA has released EA Sports FC 27 Lite, a free-to-download limited preview of its latest football game for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.

The new option lets players try several of the game's traditional match formats without purchasing the full release, while excluding major modes such as Football Ultimate Team, Career and The Grounds.

Lite launched alongside EA Sports FC 27 on September 25 and is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, the EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store. EA describes it as a streamlined introduction to the full game rather than a complete free-to-play edition, with its available content able to change over time.

FC 27 Lite includes Kick-Off, Learn to Play, Online Friendlies and Online Seasons, giving players a mixture of practice, standard match formats and online competition. It is a significantly smaller selection than the full game, but there is enough included to play standard matches and experience the core football gameplay before deciding whether to upgrade.

Kick-Off supports Classic Match, House Rules and Rush 3v3, although it uses a limited selection of clubs rather than opening the full FC 27 roster. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich's men's teams are available at launch alongside the Chelsea and OL Lyonnes women's teams, with EA confirming that the available content can rotate rather than remaining fixed permanently.

That makes Lite considerably more restricted than the full release, which features more than 21,000 players across over 800 clubs and national teams. The smaller lineup appears designed to provide a sample of the game rather than free access to its complete collection of licensed teams and competitions.

Learn to Play provides tutorials and practice for players getting used to the controls, while Online Friendlies allows matches against invited friends. Online Seasons offers the most substantial competitive option in Lite, with 1v1 matches and division-based progression giving players something to work through beyond individual Kick-Off games.

The biggest limitation is the absence of several modes from the full FC 27 experience. Football Ultimate Team and Career are not available through Lite, while The Grounds and Clubs are also excluded.

The Grounds is FC 27's new social football space and the new home of Clubs. In the full game, it is only available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, meaning PS4 and Xbox One players do not gain access to The Grounds simply by upgrading from Lite.

Players should also be aware that Lite requires a persistent internet connection even when using modes that do not involve online opponents. EA's support documentation states that all Lite modes require connectivity, so it cannot be used as an offline version of FC 27. An EA Account is also required.

EA also says modes, features and other content offered through Lite are subject to change and may not always be available in every territory. That applies particularly to the rotating content in Kick-Off, meaning the launch selection should not be treated as a permanent list.

Lite is built to provide an upgrade route for players who decide they want access to the rest of FC 27. Progress earned in the free version carries into the full game as long as the player continues with the same EA Account on the same platform, avoiding the need to start over after purchasing an edition.

On PC, the free version is available through the EA app, Steam and Epic Games Store, while both current and previous-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles are supported.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are not included in EA's Lite platform list, despite the full EA Sports FC 27 being released on Nintendo hardware.
