League Of Legends Classic Is Arriving Much Sooner Than Expected
July 13, 2026·4 min read
League of Legends players are going back to the old Rift much sooner than many expected. Riot has confirmed that League Classic launches on July 29, bringing back the older map, champions, items, runes, masteries, and some of the strange builds players still joke about years later.
This is not a far-off tease or a small throwback skin event. League Classic is a playable return to an earlier version of Riot’s MOBA, built for players who miss the slower, messier days before modern League of Legends became so polished and fast.
The most surprising part is how quickly Riot is making the game available to players. Riot only recently started talking about the project openly, but players will be able to try it before July is over.
The old Rift is coming back
League Classic brings back the classic Summoner’s Rift map and early gameplay design. Riot is selling the mode as a return to the time when the game felt simpler, rougher, and much less controlled.
That means older champion versions, old items, and old metas are part of the appeal. Riot has already pointed to things like AP Yi, Deathfire Grasp, and stunlock Sion, which tells players exactly what kind of chaos it wants to revive.
For longtime fans, that is the fun part. This was the era where matches could feel broken, funny, and painful at the same time.

Runes and masteries are part of the return
Riot is also bringing back old runes and masteries, which may be the biggest shock for players who joined later. These feel harsh for new players who did not have the same setup as everyone else.
That is why many players will be watching League Classic closely when it launches. Some players miss those older systems because they made the game feel more personal, while others may quickly remember why Riot moved on from them.
Nostalgia will do a lot of work
Many players have old memories tied to early League of Legends, whether that means weird builds, simpler champion kits, or matches that felt less optimized than they do now.
Modern League is simpler, faster, and easier for players to understand. It also has years of balance changes, better visuals, and far more champions than the older game ever had. That makes League Classic both exciting and risky. Riot is bringing back a version of the game people loved, but it is also bringing back many things players complained about at the time.
Community votes could shape what comes next
Riot is not planning to keep the mode the same forever. The official page says players will be able to vote with the community to shape the future of the Classic experience. That could be the smartest part of the plan. League of Legends has changed so many times that different players miss different eras, and one version will not please everyone.
Community voting gives Riot the freedom to make changes based on what players want. If players want another season, another item set, or a different kind of old-school experience, the mode may be able to change over time.
The real test starts after launch
Old players will log in to see familiar items, strange builds, and champions they have not played in years. The most important question is whether players will stay with the game after trying it for the first time. Nostalgia gets people through the door, but the mode still needs fair matches, stable queues, and enough support to avoid feeling like a museum piece.
League Classic arrives on July 29, and Riot now has a simple challenge: make the old Rift fun again without reminding players too quickly why the game changed.
