Magic: The Gathering Reveals First Look At Star Trek Set
July 15, 2026·4 min read
Magic: The Gathering has finally shown its first real look at the upcoming Star Trek set, and the crossover is much bigger than a few famous captains on cards. Wizards of the Coast has revealed new mechanics, Commander decks, collectible treatments, and release plans for one of its biggest Universes Beyond sets of 2026.
The set launches on MTG Arena on November 10 before its full tabletop release on November 13. Prerelease events will run from November 6 to November 12, giving players an early chance to try the cards before the full launch weekend.
For Star Trek fans, this is the first clear sign of how Wizards is turning decades of ships, crews, villains, and big moral choices into a playable Magic set. The early look suggests this is being treated as a full release, not a small side product.
The set covers the whole franchise
Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek is pulling from across the franchise, which gives Wizards a lot more to work with than one crew or one era. That means captains, ships, factions, and famous moments from different corners of Star Trek can all share the same set.
This approach makes sense because a crossover of this size needs content that appeals to many different players. Star Trek has fans who care about different shows, different crews, and different tones, so focusing too tightly on one era would have made the set feel smaller than it should.
The challenge is making all of those pieces feel like one card set. Wizards needs the cards to please longtime Star Trek fans without making the gameplay feel like a messy collection of references.
The mechanics fit the theme
The first look also showed mechanics built around ideas that match Star Trek well. Assimilate ties directly into the Borg, while Face a Dilemma turns hard choices into gameplay decisions.
Federation appears as an ability word that cares about creature types among non-Borg creatures. Spacecraft and Station also return, giving ships and large space structures a proper place inside the set.
Those choices are important because a crossover works better when the mechanics feel connected to the world. The cards need to play like Magic, but they also need to feel like Star Trek at the table.
Commander gets four decks
Commander players will receive four ready-to-play decks that they can use right away. Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, and We Are the Borg each focus on a different part of the Star Trek universe.
That lineup should make the set easy to understand for new players. Someone who cares more about Star Trek than Magic can pick a faction they already know and start there.
The Borg deck may get the most attention early because the Assimilate mechanic is easy to understand. Klingons and Federation cards should also be easy sells if the decks capture the right playstyle.
Collectors have plenty to chase
The set also includes many collectible items for fans who enjoy collecting special cards. Wizards has revealed Headliner signed cards featuring Star Trek actors, along with LCARS frames, scene cards, shock lands, Scene Boxes, and special bundles.
That is a large amount of content, but it matches what fans of this series are likely looking for. Star Trek fans often care about ships, actors, eras, and visual details, so special treatments give collectors more than one reason to look closely. Players will want the products to feel exciting without making the set hard to follow or too crowded with premium versions.
The next previews need to show the game
It shows that Wizards understands the size of the crossover and has real mechanics behind the famous names. The next step is showing whether the set plays well. Players will want to see more commons, removal, Limited themes, Commander upgrades, and how strong the new cards look in normal games.
Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek already has the names and the collector appeal. Now Wizards needs to prove the set can stand on its gameplay when the full previews begin.
