Planet Zoo 2 finally lets players build proper aquariums and aviaries
June 1, 2026·3 min read
Planet Zoo 2 is giving zoo builders the feature many fans have wanted since the first game: animals that truly belong above and below the old habitat limits. Frontier’s sequel launches on October 13, 2026, and its biggest new additions are aquariums, aviaries, and fully aquatic species, which means players can finally build proper homes for fish, sharks, turtles, and flying birds.
That is a huge shift for a series built around habitat design. The original Planet Zoo gave players plenty of land animals and some water-loving species, but it never fully delivered the aquarium fantasy. Planet Zoo 2 is changing that with customizable aquatic habitats, fresh and saltwater animals, and even the ocean sunfish, better known as the mola mola, showing up in the announcement trailer.
Aquariums are the headline feature
The biggest change is not just that Planet Zoo 2 has aquatic animals. It is that aquariums are being treated like real habitats, not simple display tanks. Players will be able to shape underwater spaces, decorate them, manage them, and build around the needs of the animals living inside.
Frontier has already confirmed black-tipped reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and colorful shoals of fish as part of the aquatic lineup. Staff will also interact with these spaces more directly, including using scuba gear and airlocks to maintain the habitats.
For players who love weird marine life, the mola mola tease is the fun part. It is one of the strangest-looking fish on the planet, and exactly the kind of animal that can make an aquarium feel more memorable than a standard tank full of familiar choices.

Flying birds finally get their own space
Players can build custom spaces for flying birds, with confirmed animals including toco toucans and secretary birds. Guests will also be able to walk through these spaces, which should make them feel more like living exhibits than fenced-off scenery.
That matters because birds were one of the biggest missing pieces in the first game. Planet Zoo had strong habitat tools, but flying species always felt like a natural next step. Aviaries give the sequel a clear reason to exist beyond prettier graphics and more animals.
They also open the door for better guest experiences. A walk-through aviary can become a showpiece area in a zoo, especially for players who enjoy designing paths, viewing areas, and themed sections.
Conservation now reaches beyond the zoo
Planet Zoo 2 is also expanding its conservation focus. Players will be able to take part in global restoration projects and release animals into revived wildlife reserves, giving the management side a broader purpose than keeping guests happy and habitats clean.
Planet Zoo has always been at its best when it makes players think about animal needs, not just park profits. The sequel seems to be pushing that idea further by connecting zoo management to larger conservation goals.
Frontier is also improving animal behavior and presentation, with better fur, feather, and scale rendering, stronger environmental interaction, and more visible mood-based behavior.
The sequel arrives on PC and consoles
Planet Zoo 2 launches on October 13, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are already open, and Frontier plans to share more details during summer showcase events in early June.
The first game already gave players a strong zoo-building sandbox. The sequel’s job is to make those zoos feel more complete, and aquariums, aviaries, mola mola, flying birds, and wildlife reserves are exactly the kind of additions that can make Planet Zoo 2 feel like a real step forward.
