Yet Another Zombie Defense HD Is Free on Steam

Steam libraries have a habit of collecting games that sounded fun for one evening and then disappeared beneath years of sale purchases. Yet Another Zombie Defense HD fits that description perfectly, but its blunt name and simple co-op setup are getting another chance now that it is free to keep.

Players can add the Windows version to their Steam account through July 30 and keep it permanently. The game normally costs $3.99, so this is not a huge saving, but it is an easy reason to gather a few friends and revisit the kind of small zombie shooter that once filled the cheaper end of the Steam store.

Released in 2017, Yet Another Zombie Defense HD mixes twin-stick shooting with light tower-defense ideas. Each run moves between nighttime attacks and short preparation periods, where players spend money on weapons, ammunition, barricades, traps, and turrets before the next wave arrives with more enemies and less room to recover.

Defense mode carries the main build-and-survive loop, Endless removes the base-building breaks, and Deathmatch lets players fight each other while zombies keep causing trouble around them. Steam Workshop support also allows custom characters and levels, giving the old package some extra personality.

None of these systems are especially deep, and the game does not have the permanent upgrade structure common in newer survival games. Awesome Games Studio has described it as a small, bite-sized release, which is the fairest expectation. This is built for short runs, quick restarts, and the pleasure of watching a plan collapse under one more wave.

The same arena, repeated waves, and basic progression can start to feel flat once the first few weapons and defenses have been tested. Difficulty also rises sharply, leaving solo runs with fewer chances to recover when barricades break or a badly placed turret fails to cover the right side.

Up to four players can join through local or online co-op, and that is where the game finds its energy. One person can focus on repairs while another saves for stronger weapons, and every bad purchase becomes funnier when the group has to survive it. The shooting is uncomplicated, but shared panic gives the routine a better rhythm.

The giveaway also solves an old problem for a small multiplayer game: finding enough people who own it. Asking three friends to buy an aging zombie shooter is a harder sell than sending them a free Steam link. Its overall user reviews remain Very Positive, suggesting plenty of players still enjoy the action even when the presentation and variety feel dated.

Awesome Games Studio is using the promotion to lead into the full release of Yet Another Zombie Survivors on August 20. The newer game keeps the studio's interest in oversized undead crowds but changes the format, replacing manual twin-stick shooting and defensive building with automatic attacks, squad development, permanent upgrades, and a faster bullet-heaven structure.

Version 1.0 is planned to add the Ranger as a ninth survivor, the circular Bio Lab map, and a Boss Rush mode built around preparing for a final enemy at the ten-minute mark. A Nintendo Switch version is expected after the initial full release, while the PC edition will keep its current price when Early Access ends.

The two games are different enough that the giveaway does not feel like a direct demo. Instead, it works as a quick look at where the series started before the studio moves to a larger and more modern progression system.
