2 Fascinating Retro Games Are Coming to PS5 This Week

The PS5 is taking players back in time this week, with two very different gaming experiences bringing the past to life. Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns arrives today with a modern take on the 1986 strategy classic, while Blood: Refreshed Supply gets its physical PS5 release on August 14. Neither game is trying to be a new blockbuster. Both bring plenty of gaming history with them.
These releases show two very different ways to bring classic games back. Defender of the Crown brings the classic strategy game back with modern features and a new mode. Blood brings its classic Build Engine shooter to modern consoles with expansions, mod support, and updated controls.
Originally released in 1986, Defender of the Crown helped shape the cinematic strategy games that became popular on home computers. The basic objective remains familiar: conquer provinces, raise armies, raid castles, and compete with rival rulers for control of medieval England. The PS5 version launches August 13 with offline single-player support.
The remake is not simply putting the old game behind a better interface. Retro Mode keeps the original Amiga look while adding some quality-of-life improvements. Classic Mode gives the game a fresh look with updated gameplay. Kingdom Mode goes further with procedural maps, dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and several difficulty options.
That gives longtime fans a way to revisit the game without forcing newcomers into a decades-old presentation. The original has plenty of old-school charm, but its age can make it less easy to play today. Kingdom Mode stands out because it gives players a reason to play the campaign again instead of just remembering it.
Blood: Refreshed Supply takes the retro FPS route, bringing Monolith's 1997 shooter to physical PS5 shelves on August 14. Players control Caleb, an undead gunslinger with weapons ranging from a pitchfork to dynamite. He fights through 42 levels filled with cultists, demons, deadly traps, and the series' dark humor.
The release includes the original campaign, along with the Plasma Pak and Cryptic Passage expansions. Marrow and Death Wish add even more content to the game. Nightdive has also added better mod support, customizable controls, and modern multiplayer features. This makes the package much bigger than the original 1990s release.
The remaster has received a mixed response, despite its long-awaited arrival on consoles. Some players are happy to finally play Blood on modern consoles. Others have criticized the $29.99 price and reported problems with the controls and multiplayer. Recent PS5 owners have still praised the core game, especially for preserving the brutal combat and old-school atmosphere.
Defender of the Crown is aimed at players curious about an important piece of PC gaming history as much as longtime fans. Its new look and Kingdom Mode give the classic strategy game a fresh feel. The original-style option also keeps its Amiga roots intact. That balance could make it the more interesting game of the two.
Blood: Refreshed Supply has a different strength because its core gameplay is still easy to understand. Fast movement, unusual weapons, hidden secrets, and tough enemies give Caleb's campaign a unique feel. Its dark humor also gives it a style that many modern shooters lack.
For PS5 players who want something different this August, these two releases are worth checking out. Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is available August 13, while the physical Blood: Refreshed Supply edition ships August 14. One brings back a classic strategy game from the 1980s, while the other puts a famous 1990s shooter back on physical shelves.
